Why does the base matter as much as the mattress?

The mattress can only be as even as the deck under it. Warranties treat the base as part of the product system. A wide slat gap, a missing centre rail, or a tired box spring can make foam and hybrids dip. That dip then looks like sag. The maker may call it misuse. “Preferred” means a firm, even deck. It does not mean a brand ranking. “Often discouraged” means many foam warranties say no to a flexing coil box. Always check.

What rules override the table?

Manufacturer warranty text wins.
Measure clear slat gaps — see slatted bases. A common foam and hybrid limit is about 7 cm.
Box spring vs foundation — coils in a box are not a solid deck.
Adjustable beds need constructions that bend. Thick, rigid, traditionally tufted units may crack or void cover.
Sprung-edge divans change perceived firmness slightly versus platform tops.

Can memory foam go on slats?

What about ottomans and drawers?

An ottoman lid is often a firm platform when closed. That can be a good foam deck. Check strut ratings against mattress weight. Drawer divans keep a fixed deck. Do not store so much in drawers that the box twists. A twisted box is an uneven base.

How do I prove the base was suitable?
