How do I measure a bedroom for a UK bed?
Tape the wall-to-wall floor. Then subtract the mattress plan and the extra frame. Leave about 50–60 cm to walk beside the bed if you can. That walkway is a useful target. It is not a law.
A UK King mattress is 150 × 200 cm. A Super King is 180 × 200 cm. A Double is 135 × 190 cm. The furniture can be larger. Sleigh scrolls and tall headboards eat length. See bed footprint and access.
Write every number in centimetres. Shop names fail when an IKEA or EU line joins the room.
What measurements should I take?

Use a tape, not footsteps. Mark the mattress rectangle with masking tape on the floor. Live with that tape for a day. You will see if a Super King turns the room into a corridor.
The National Bed Federation says UK length and width are industry practice, not an Act. Accepted making spread is ±20 mm. That note was checked on 28 August 2026. Measure the real product when it arrives.
How do frames change the floor plan?
A divan usually matches the mattress plan closely. A wooden or metal bedstead often sticks out. A sleigh adds length at the foot. A floor-standing headboard adds depth at the wall.
An ottoman needs space for the lid. Do not park the bed so the lid hits a radiator or a sill.
Drawers need pull space. Two drawers on the aisle side can steal your 50 cm walkway.
What about stairs and doorways?
Measure the tightest point, not the front door. Landings and corners fail first. A Super King mattress at 180 × 200 cm often will not turn.
Do not fold a pocket sprung mattress to force it. That can damage the unit and void cover. Options: zip-and-link halves, a rolled bed-in-a-box the maker designed to compress, or a smaller plan.
A two-piece divan still needs the mattress to take the same path unless you chose zip-and-link.
What if the room is small?
Start with the walkway, not the shop name. A Double at 135 × 190 cm may leave more life in the room than a King you cannot walk around.
Guests and pets need floor too. Storage beds need empty air. A small room with an ottoman and no lid space is a daily fight.
IKEA UK lists extra centimetre lines beside standard UK sizes. That guide was checked on 28 August 2026. A 90 × 200 mattress is longer than a UK Single. Tape that extra 10 cm on the floor before you fall for the name.
