What size fitted sheet do I need in the UK?
Match the mattress plan first. A UK Single sheet is cut for 90 × 190 cm. A Small Double is 120 × 190 cm. A Double is 135 × 190 cm. A King is 150 × 200 cm. A Super King is 180 × 200 cm. Then match pocket depth to the stacked height at the corner.
The name on the pack is a nickname. The centimetre pair is the fact. If the mattress came from another country, ignore the UK name and use the mattress width and length.
In short: two numbers for the plan. One number for the pocket.
Why do fitted sheets fail for two different reasons?
Fitted sheets fail for two different reasons. Wrong plan size means the width and length do not match the mattress. Wrong pocket depth means the elastic cannot clear the corner stack.
Plan size names follow UK mattress sizes. Vertical fit follows mattress depth. Add a protector and a topper before you judge the pocket.
A sheet can be the right King plan and still pop off. That is a depth problem, not a name problem.

EU and US names differ. See UK vs EU and US sizes. A “King” pack from another country can be a different cut.
The National Bed Federation says UK mattress length and width are industry practice, not a legal Act. Accepted making spread is plus or minus 20 mm. A sheet cut for 150 × 200 cm can still sit on a mattress that arrived at 149 cm. It will not sit on a 160 cm mattress.
How deep should the pocket be?
Add three heights before you buy. Mattress depth. Protector height. Topper height. Write the total in centimetres. Then read the sheet’s pocket depth.
Many UK mattresses sit near 20–30 cm deep. A thin protector adds little. A topper can add 5–10 cm or more. If the stack is 35 cm, a pocket sold as “standard deep” at about 25 cm will fight you every morning.

Shops use “deep” in different ways. The centimetre wins. A “deep” word with no number is not a spec.
How do I measure stacked height at the corner?
Stand at a corner. Measure from the underside of the mattress to the top of the topper. Include the protector. If you cannot reach under, measure from the top of the slats. Write that number in centimetres.
Then read the sheet label. If the pocket is smaller than the stack, the elastic will ride up. If the pocket is much larger than the stack, the sheet can wrinkle and slide.

What if my mattress is an EU or IKEA size?
Do not buy a UK Double sheet for a 140 × 200 mattress. Do not buy a UK King sheet for a 160 × 200 mattress. Use the mattress centimetres, not the shop you bought the frame from.
IKEA UK lists both UK standard sizes and extra centimetre lines. That note was checked on their mattress size guide on 28 August 2026. A sheet bought for a UK King will not match every IKEA line.

What duvet size sits with each sheet?
The duvet is a different SKU. It is cut larger than the mattress so it drapes. Buy a duvet labelled for the same UK name as the mattress. Then read the duvet’s own centimetres.

In short: sheets match the plan and the pocket. Duvets match the name and then the pack centimetres.
Who should skip a “one size up” sheet?
Skip sizing up if the pocket is already tight. A larger plan on a small mattress slides and wrinkles. Size up only when the mattress is truly the next regional width — for example 160 cm — and you have confirmed the sheet is cut for that width.
Do not size up “to be safe” on a true UK King. A Super King sheet on a 150 cm mattress will bag. That is not extra comfort. It is extra crease.
Does fabric change the size?
No. Percale vs sateen changes hand-feel, not cut. Size is the pattern and the elastic. A stretch jersey can forgive a small miss. It cannot turn 150 cm into 160 cm.
What mistakes waste a sheet?
Buying King sheets for a 160 cm continental mattress without measuring. Ignoring topper height. Stretching a Double sheet onto a King “because it almost fits”. Trusting the bedstead’s marketing name over the mattress centimetres.
Write three numbers before you pay. Width. Length. Pocket. That list beats a shop nickname.
