Hybrid mattresses
A hybrid mattress combines springs with foam or latex layers. The springs give support and the top layers set the feel. UK shops sell hybrids in every standard size, and many arrive rolled. Read the full layer list, the spring type and the approved base, because the word hybrid alone tells you little.

What are hybrid mattresses?
A hybrid mattress mixes two kinds of construction. It has springs, and it has foam or latex comfort layers. There is no fixed rule for how much of each a mattress needs before it can be called a hybrid.
Some hybrids have a full-height pocket spring core with a few centimetres of foam on top. Others have a thick foam base with a thin layer of small springs above it. Both can be sold under the same name.
That is why the layer list matters more than the label. Read it from the bottom up. Find the part that gives the main support, then look at what sits on top of it.
What types of hybrid mattresses are there?
Pocket springs with memory foam
A pocket spring core with a memory foam comfort layer. The surface moulds slowly, while the springs push back underneath.
Pocket springs with latex
A pocket spring core with a latex comfort layer. Latex springs back faster than memory foam, so the surface feels more buoyant.
Foam core with small springs
A foam support base with a layer of small springs above it. The springs add give at the surface. Ask how deep the foam core is.
Linked-spring hybrid
A linked or continuous spring unit with foam on top. Linked springs move together more than pocket springs, so more movement can travel across the bed.
Rolled hybrid
A hybrid built to be squashed and rolled into a box for delivery. It expands after you open it.
Zoned hybrid
Springs or foams with different firmness in different areas, such as under the shoulders and hips. Ask where each zone sits.
What are the pros and cons of hybrid mattresses?
Good points
- Mixes the support and bounce of springs with the softer feel of foam or latex.
- Air can move through the spring layer, which many people find cooler than an all-foam mattress.
- A pocket spring core passes on less movement than linked springs.
- A wide choice of feels, from soft to firm, in every UK size.
- Many arrive rolled, which helps with narrow stairs and loft rooms.
Things to weigh up
- The word hybrid has no standard meaning, so two hybrids can be built very differently.
- Usually heavier than all-foam mattresses, so they are harder to lift and rotate.
- A thick memory foam top can still feel warm.
- Rolled hybrids need time to expand, and returns can be harder once the box is opened.
- Deep hybrids may need deep-pocket sheets, and can sit high on some bed frames.
What sizes do hybrid mattresses come in?
Hybrid mattresses come in all the standard UK sizes: Small Single 75 × 190 cm, Single 90 × 190 cm, Small Double 120 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm.
Rolled hybrids are also sold in EU sizes, such as 140 × 200 cm or 160 × 200 cm. These do not fit UK frames of the same name. Always read the centimetres.
Hybrids are often deeper than all-foam mattresses. Measure the depth before you buy fitted sheets, or use the mattress on an ottoman or a bunk bed.
A King or Super King hybrid can be heavy. Check the weight if you need to rotate it on your own.
| UK size | Mattress size | Shop name |
|---|---|---|
| Small Single | 75 × 190 cm | 2ft 6 |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 3ft |
| Small Double | 120 × 190 cm | 4ft |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 4ft 6 |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 5ft |
| Super King | 180 × 200 cm | 6ft |
| Emperor (common) | 200 × 200 cm | 6 ft 6 |
Frames and headboards can be bigger than the mattress. Ask for the outer size in centimetres.
What should you check before buying hybrid mattresses?
- What gives the main support: full-height pocket springs, linked springs or a foam core.
- The spring type and count, and which UK size the count is quoted for.
- Each comfort layer: its material and its depth in centimetres.
- How the edges are built, if you often sit on the side of the bed.
- The mattress weight, if it will go on an ottoman with gas struts.
- The base the maker approves, the widest slat gap allowed, and whether it can go on an adjustable bed.
- Whether it arrives rolled or flat, plus the trial and returns terms for that delivery type.
- A permanent UK fire-safety label, usually naming BS 7177. Online orders usually also come with 14 days to cancel from delivery.
Will hybrid mattresses fit your room?
A hybrid fits any bed frame of the same UK size. Measure the inside of the frame in centimetres before you order.
A deep hybrid can make a bed sit high. Check it still suits the headboard height and how easily you get in and out of bed.
On a bunk bed or cabin bed, use the maximum mattress depth the bed maker gives, so the guard rail stays high enough.
Plan it with the bed room planner.
Delivery and assembly
Many hybrids arrive rolled in a box, but some arrive flat. Ask which before you order, and measure stairs and doorways for a flat one.
For a rolled hybrid, open the box in the room where it will go. Unroll it on the base and follow the maker’s recovery time.
Do not fold a flat spring mattress to get it round a corner unless the maker says you can.
Ask whether delivery includes carrying it to your room, and whether the seller can take your old mattress away.
Check your doors, stairs and turns with the delivery fit checker.
How do you look after hybrid mattresses?
Use a washable mattress protector to keep the surface clean and dry.
Rotate head to foot as the label says. Most hybrids are one-sided, so do not flip them unless the label allows it.
Spot-clean foam layers with as little water as possible, and let them dry fully.
Shallow impressions where you lie are common. Check the warranty for the depth that counts as a fault.

Frequently asked questions
What is a hybrid mattress?
A hybrid combines springs with foam or latex layers. Read the full construction to find the main support, the spring type and the comfort layers. Different models can use very different arrangements under the same name.
Is a hybrid mattress better than memory foam?
Neither type is automatically better. A hybrid usually feels bouncier and lets more air move. All-foam usually moulds more and is lighter. Compare the exact models for feel, edge support, weight and approved base.
What is the difference between a hybrid and a pocket sprung mattress?
Both can use pocket springs. A hybrid usually puts more foam or latex on top. A traditional pocket sprung mattress often uses natural fillings instead. The layers decide the feel, not the name.
Are hybrid mattresses good for hot sleepers?
They can help, because air moves through the spring layer. But you lie on the top layers. A thick memory foam top or a heavy duvet can still feel warm. Check the comfort layers and the cover.
Do hybrid mattresses come rolled?
Many do, but not all. A rolled hybrid needs time to expand after you open it. Follow the maker’s guidance for that model, and read the returns terms before you open the box.
What base does a hybrid mattress need?
A firm, even base that the maker approves, such as a divan or a slatted frame. The allowed slat gap depends on the maker, so read the instructions for your exact model.
How long does a hybrid mattress last?
Many guides give about 7 to 10 years as a typical range. Body weight, base support, rotation and care all change that. It is a guide, not a warranty promise.
Can you flip a hybrid mattress?
Most hybrids are one-sided, with the comfort layers only on top. You rotate them head to foot instead of flipping them. The care label tells you which applies.
