How to Try a Mattress in a UK Shop
Published 2026-08-28. Last updated 2026-08-28. Desk research by Kaiser Khan — we have not product-tested how to try a mattress in a shop. This is not a shop review and not medical advice.
In short
To try a mattress in a UK bed shop, take your shoes off and lie in the position you actually sleep. Stay at least ten minutes. Soft, medium and firm labels are not a shared scale. Check spring tension or foam density for your weight, then the top feel. Bring your partner if you share the bed.
- Minimum lie-down
- 10 minutes
- What a shop cannot show
- Not a night
Your real sleep position. Shoes off.
Heat, settlement and 3am motion need a trial or time at home.

What materials go into this mattress?
Typical builds use pocket springs, memory foam, latex, hybrid stacks, open coil springs. Exact stacks vary by model. Read the spec, not the shop slogan.

How long does this mattress typically last?
A typical range is 6– 10 years. Body weight, base support and rotation change that. It is not a warranty promise.

How do I try a mattress in a UK bed shop?
Take your shoes off. Lie in the position you actually sleep. Stay at least ten minutes. Soft, medium and firm labels are not a shared scale. Check spring tension or foam density for your weight. Then notice the top feel.
Sitting on the edge only tests the border. Perching on your back in a coat only tests the shop lighting. Big UK shops invite a lie-down. Use it as a short load test, not as a night’s sleep.
Take the questions script with you. Write facts before you compare “medium” tickets.
What should I do in the first two minutes?
- Confirm the UK size in centimetres. A King is 150 × 200 cm. A Double is 135 × 190 cm.
- Ask what the support system is — pocket, open coil, foam, latex or hybrid.
- Ask which tension or density band this model is built for.
- Take off shoes and any thick belt.
- Use a pillow height close to home, or fold a shop pillow to that height.
Then lie down. Side sleepers should load a shoulder and a hip. Back sleepers should feel whether the lower back hammocks. Stomach sleepers should notice hip sink. Combination sleepers should change position once. See firmness and sleep position.
This is not medical advice. Pain that does not ease when you change beds needs a qualified professional.
What should I notice after ten minutes?
Whether you still feel the core as a hard line. Whether a hip or shoulder is numb. Whether you can turn over without a fight. Whether the edge holds you when you sit up.
Foam can feel kinder after a few minutes as it warms. Springs show their push-back sooner. Do not crown a memory-foam bed after thirty seconds. Do not crown a pocket bed because the quilt is plush.
If you share the bed, both of you should lie at once. Ask someone to sit or turn on the other side. That is a rough motion check. It is not a 3am test.
What can a shop try-out not tell me?
Six-month fill settlement. Night-time heat. A partner who tosses after midnight. A slatted base at home that is weaker than the shop divan. A rolled mattress that has not finished expanding.
That is why trials and legal refund clocks exist. A ten-minute lie-down is a filter. It is not a proof.
Matching quizzes and body scans are also filters. They can miss partner weight and your real base. See how mattress matching quizzes work.
What should I write before I leave?
| Write this | Why |
|---|---|
| Width × length in cm | Names fail across shops |
| Support system | So you compare like with like |
| Tension or density for your weight | Soft on the ticket may be the quilt |
| One-sided or turnable | Care and ageing |
| Approved base | Home slats may void cover |
| Trial and cancel rules | Comfort dislike lives here |
If two people need two bands, ask whether the floor model is split tension or zip-and-link. Those are different builds.
Who should skip a long lie-down?
Skip it if you already know the type and only need centimetres. Skip it if you will only buy a rolled bed online and the shop has no like-for-like stack. Skip treating a scan as a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I lie on a mattress in a shop?
Stay at least ten minutes in your real sleep position. Two minutes on your back in jeans only tests the shop floor. Take your shoes off. Bring the pillow height you use at home if you can.
Can I tell if a mattress is right after one lie-down?
You can tell first-contact feel and whether you bottom out. You cannot tell six-month softening, night-time heat, or partner motion. That is what a trial is for, if one exists.
Should couples try a mattress together?
Yes, if you will share it. Lie at the same time. Check motion and whether one of you sinks much further. If weights differ a lot, ask about split tension or zip-and-link.
Do comfort-grade labels replace a lie-down?
No. Soft, medium and firm mean different things in different shops. A medium pocket bed and a medium foam bed are not the same test. Lie down, then write the construction facts.
Where do these facts come from?
BedGuide is desk research. The numbers and rules on this page were checked against the official or primary sources below. We name the check date. We do not invent a figure when a source is missing.
- National Bed Federation — regulations and standards — Size names are industry practice. A shop “King” still needs centimetres at home. A lie-down does not replace a tape measure. Checked 2026-08-28.
