Which bed types are popular in the UK?

Divans, bedsteads and storage beds deserve separate checks when you plan a new bed. Popularity does not establish mattress fit, build quality or suitability for your room.

The National Bed Federation’s 2025 survey questioned 1,000 people who bought a bed or mattress in the previous year. It reported:

Fieldwork took place in June–July 2025. These are survey findings, not audited sales of every UK bed. The categories do not tell us how many bedsteads had ottoman storage. They cannot establish the best-selling ottoman, brand or individual model.

As checked on 8 September 2026, Bensons’ best-selling collection included Penelope and Lilliana ottomans, a Hip Hop wooden frame set and a Duet sofa bed. What are the main UK bed types?

The useful distinction is between support, storage and finish. Ask three separate questions: what holds the mattress, how does storage open, and what covers the frame?

An ottoman can use slats. A divan can have a lifting lid. A wooden frame can contain drawers. Avoid comparing these labels as if they were separate boxes with no overlap. Bed Advice UK’s terminology guide uses ottoman for lift-up storage in either a divan or bedframe.

Which bed type works in a small bedroom?

Start with the available floor space and the route around the bed. A small room needs more than a mattress that fits between two walls.

For example, imagine a wardrobe opposite the foot of the bed. An end-opening ottoman may leave too little standing room when the wardrobe opens. Side-opening storage could work if one long side is accessible. If both sides are blocked, drawers there will be awkward too. Draw the opening positions on your room plan before comparing storage volume.

A plain frame with a low footboard may keep a sightline open. That is a visual effect, not extra floor space. A thick upholstered surround can take up more room than a larger mattress on a compact base. Compare the seller’s external width and length.

What sizes do UK beds come in?

Common UK mattress dimensions are below. Frame dimensions are larger or model dependent.

“Double ottoman” combines a size with a storage type. “King upholstered bed” combines a size with a finish. Neither phrase gives the external frame size or confirms that a mattress comes with it. Check the full UK size guide before ordering sheets, a base or a mattress separately.

Does the bed frame decide the mattress type?

The mattress and support surface must work together. Wood, metal and fabric alone do not tell you which mattress will fit. Read the mattress maker’s rules for the deck, slat gap and centre support. A moving adjustable base also needs explicit mattress compatibility.

What should I compare before choosing a bed?

Make a short specification sheet for each candidate. Record its mattress size, external dimensions, support surface and storage opening. Add the largest delivery package, assembly needs and replacement-part availability. For an ottoman, record the mattress weight limits separately from the sleeping load and storage load.

Then eliminate options that fail a real constraint. A bed that blocks a door is unsuitable regardless of its popularity.
