What is an ottoman bed and how does it work?

An ottoman bed has a mattress platform that opens to reach storage beneath it. Hinges guide the movement. Gas struts commonly help raise and lower the platform. The mattress normally stays on the platform while the storage opens, subject to the model’s instructions.

Ottoman is a storage description. It is not a promise about mattress comfort or the material of the frame. Bed Advice UK includes lift-up storage in both divans and bedsteads. A fabric-covered divan with a lifting lid is therefore an ottoman too.

Side-opening vs end-opening: which fits my room?

Choose the opening direction around where you can stand and reach. Do not choose by the room’s total area alone.

Look for bedside tables, a low window, sloping ceilings, pendant lights and wardrobe doors. Ask for the dimensions with the bed fully open. Neither the mattress length nor a photo gives the complete opening envelope.

For example, a bed with furniture down both sides may leave the foot as the only useful access point. An end lift is then worth investigating. If the foot faces a close wardrobe, a side lift may be easier to reach. These are layout examples, not confirmation that a particular bed fits.

What mattress weight can an ottoman bed take?

Use the permitted mattress weight range for the exact model and size. There is no universal safe ottoman mattress weight. Also ask whether a minimum weight applies and how bedding affects the operating instructions.

For a concrete example, IKEA’s MALM standard double, article 504.048.19, specifies a maximum mattress weight of 40 kg when checked on 8 September 2026. IKEA warns that exceeding it can cause the slatted base to fall. This figure belongs to that product. It must not be copied to another ottoman or size.

Keep three different limits separate:

A large storage space is not permission to fill it with heavy objects. The bottom panel may have a much lower limit than the sleeping platform.

How do ottoman gas struts help lift the mattress?

Gas struts use compressed gas to exert force. Their position and the hinge layout affect how that force helps move the lid. The printed force rating, usually in newtons, is not a direct mattress weight rating in kilograms.

Do not calculate a replacement strut from mattress weight alone. The full mechanism includes the lid, mounting points and hardware. Use the bed maker’s approved replacement part and fitting process. A higher number on a strut does not automatically make the bed safer or easier to use.

If the platform drops, opens unexpectedly or becomes difficult to control, stop operating it. Contact the supplier. Do not lean into the storage opening while investigating a faulty lift or prop it with a household object.

The assembly overview helps identify the parts, but the model’s manual controls the assembly sequence.

Is an ottoman better than a divan with drawers?

Compare how you use storage. Drawers can be convenient for items you fetch often. Lift-up storage may accept bulkier items, depending on the usable compartment shape. Internal dividers and mechanisms can reduce the space you can actually use.

Try the mechanism in person if possible. Consider whether you can reach items at the far end without entering or leaning deeply into the compartment. Keep children and pets clear whenever the mechanism moves and follow all product warnings.

What are double and king ottoman bed dimensions?

UK double mattresses measure 135 × 190 cm. UK king mattresses measure 150 × 200 cm. These dimensions are for the mattress, not the complete bed. Rails, padding and headboards can add width and length.

Ask for external dimensions, headboard height, the fully open height and the largest delivery package. Check doorways and stair turns as well as the bedroom. A lift-up base that fits when assembled may arrive in sections that cannot make the turn on your landing.

Use the UK size table to match the mattress. Then use the supplier’s frame drawing to check the room.

What should I check before choosing an ottoman?

Record the model, size, mattress dimensions and mattress weight. Get the approved weight range, support specification and instructions in writing. Confirm the opening direction, full opening dimensions and compartment load limit. Ask what assembly and replacement-part support is available.

Then compare the result with a drawer divan and a plain bed frame. Storage is useful only when it fits the room and remains practical to access.
