Memory Foam Mattress Explained

In short
Memory foam is a type of polyurethane foam that slowly springs back after you press it. It also gets softer or firmer with temperature. Body heat softens the contact zone. A cooler room makes it feel firmer. Density in kg/m³ and indentation load deflection (ILD) describe the foam grade better than marketing thickness alone.

What materials go into this mattress?
Typical builds use viscoelastic polyurethane foam, support foam base layers, cover textiles. Exact stacks vary by model. Read the spec, not the shop slogan.

How long does this mattress typically last?
A typical range is 6– 8 years. Body weight, base support and rotation change that. It is not a warranty promise.

What is memory foam in a mattress?
Memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane foam. It squashes under load and returns slowly when the load is removed. That slow return is the “moulding” feel. It is not natural latex. It is not a pocket spring.
Pressure relief comes from spreading contact force over a larger area as the foam yields. That can help when shoulders and hips need sink for side-sleeping alignment. It can feel stuck if you want to turn quickly.
Why does memory foam feel firmer when the room is cold?
Heat softens many memory foams. Body heat creates a more plush contact patch. A cold bedroom leaves the same foam stiffer until it warms. That is a material property, not a defect and not a failed product.
If you hate that swing, look at latex, pocket sprung, or open-cell foams that recover faster. See latex vs Dunlop/Talalay and pocket sprung.
What do density and ILD actually measure?
They measure different things. Density (kg/m³) is mass per volume. It often links to how long the foam lasts. ILD or IFD is the force needed to indent the foam. It describes soft versus firm feel.
| Metric | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Density (kg/m³) | Mass per volume | Often links to how long the foam lasts |
| ILD / IFD | Force to indent the foam | Describes soft vs firm feel |
High-density foam can still be soft. Low-density foam can feel firm but may wear sooner. Thickness alone does not define either metric. See foam density explained and ILD / IFD.
Do gel and open-cell foams sleep cooler?
Open-cell foam has more tiny air paths. That can feel cooler than classic slow-melting memory foam. Gel additives change how heat and touch feel. They do not turn foam into stone or into a radiator.
Treat “cooling” as a feel claim unless the listing names a test. See gel foam and cooling claims and mattress heat and cooling.
Where does memory foam sit in a mattress?
As a full foam core. As a comfort layer over support foam. As a comfort layer over pocket springs in a hybrid. The support foam or spring unit underneath stops the comfort layer from hammocking.
A thin memory-foam topper on an old sprung mattress is a surface change only. It will not rebuild a collapsed core. See make a mattress firmer or softer.
How should I care for a memory foam mattress?
Do not soak it. Foam cores dry slowly. Use a waterproof or tightly woven protector. Rotate end-to-end on the schedule in turning vs rotating. Follow cleaning memory foam for spot treatment only.
Bases matter. Wide slat gaps can hammock foam. Check the maker’s maximum gap — often around 7 cm, but the leaflet wins. See base compatibility.
Typical educational lifespan is about 6–8 years. That is not a warranty. See lifespan by material.
Off-gassing of new foam is a smell of leftover chemistry leaving the cells. Ventilate. It is not a medical diagnosis. See mattress off-gassing.
A memory foam mattress is a poor pick if you want bounce, easy turning, or a very airy core. It can be a good pick if you want slow contouring and less partner bounce than a linked open-coil grid. Compare mechanisms in pocket sprung vs memory foam rather than shopping by slogan.

Frequently asked questions
What is memory foam made of?
Memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane foam — a polymer that flows slowly and springs back gradually. It is not natural latex. Density (kg/m³) and hardness (ILD/IFD) describe grade more precisely than the word memory alone.
Why does memory foam feel firmer in a cold bedroom?
Memory foam softens as temperature rises. Body heat creates a more moulding contact zone. Cooler room conditions leave the foam stiffer until it warms. That is a material property, not a defect.
Can you wash a memory foam mattress with lots of water?
No. Soaking memory foam traps liquid inside and dries slowly. That risks odour and material breakdown. Use low-moisture spot cleaning and a washable protector. See BedGuide's cleaning guide for foam-safe methods.
Is gel memory foam cooler?
Gel additives and open-cell structures can change how heat and touch feel. They do not turn polyurethane into a different material. Cooling claims are feel claims unless a test method is named.
