When is the best time to buy a bed in the UK?
The best time to buy a bed or mattress in the UK is usually during a big sale season. These come round every year: January, National Bed Month in March, the bank holiday weekends, Black Friday in late November and Boxing Day.
A sale only helps if the discount is real. A “was” price must have been charged for real, recently, in the same shop. Read how to check a ‘was’ price before you trust a big red number.
If your old mattress has failed, do not wait for a date on a calendar. A good fit and fair terms matter more than timing.
In short: plan around the seasons if you can, and check every deal the same way.
What happens in each month?
This table shows common UK patterns. It is not a promise about any one shop. Dates are for England and Wales bank holidays.
| Month | What often happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| January | January sales after Christmas | Was the higher price charged before Christmas? |
| March | National Bed Month (NBF) | Promotions should still show real ‘was’ prices |
| March/April | Easter weekend (Good Friday 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March in 2027) | Delivery dates over the long weekend |
| May | Two bank holiday weekends (3 May and 31 May in 2027) | Short “weekend only” deadlines |
| August | Summer bank holiday (30 August in 2027) | Lead times for made-to-order beds |
| September | Sleeptember sleep-awareness month | Advice campaigns are not always sales |
| November | Black Friday (27 November 2026) and Cyber Monday (30 November 2026) | Countdown timers and ‘up to’ claims |
| December | Boxing Day sales (bank holiday moved to 28 December in 2026) | Christmas delivery cut-offs |
What is National Bed Month?
National Bed Month is a yearly campaign in March. It is run by the National Bed Federation (NBF). The NBF is the UK trade body for bed makers and suppliers. The Sleep Charity supports the campaign.
The NBF says the month shares tips on buying and caring for beds, and sleep advice. It also says the campaign aims to lift bed sales in what it calls a quieter trading period. So expect bed shops to run offers in March.
That makes March a good month to compare. It does not mean every March price is a bargain.
Is September a good time to buy a bed?
September is Sleeptember. That is The Sleep Charity’s yearly campaign about healthy sleep. In 2025, the charity and Bed Advice UK, the NBF’s public-facing side, asked bed retailers and makers to back it.
Sleeptember is mainly an advice campaign. Some shops may link offers to it, but it is not a fixed sale season. Treat any September deal like any other: check the price history and the terms.
Are Black Friday bed deals real?
Black Friday is the Friday after the US Thanksgiving holiday. It falls in late November. In 2026 it is Friday 27 November, and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Many sales start earlier and run for days or weeks.
Some Black Friday deals are real. Some are not. Watch for three things:
- A “was” price that was only charged for a short time, or long ago
- “Up to 50% off” headlines where only a few items get the full discount
- Countdown clocks that pressure you to decide fast
Big items such as divan beds and ottoman beds can take weeks to make and deliver. Ask for a delivery date before you pay.
How do you tell a real sale from a fake one?
Ask four questions:
- When was the higher price charged, and for how long?
- Was it charged in the same shop or website?
- Does the headline discount apply to the item you want, or only to a few?
- Is delivery included, or clearly shown before checkout?
Our guide to checking a ‘was’ price explains the UK rules behind each question. Compare the same size in centimetres. A Double is 135 × 190 cm and a King is 150 × 200 cm, so make sure both prices are for the same size.
Should you wait for a sale to buy a mattress?
Only if you can sleep well while you wait. A sale saves money. It does not fix a bed that hurts or sags today.
If you can wait, use the time well:
- Measure the room, the stairs and the doorways
- Read before you buy a mattress
- Try mattresses in a shop with our in-store checklist
- Note the full price of two or three choices now, so you can compare later
Don’t let a deadline rush you
A “weekend only” or “ends tonight” banner is designed to make you decide fast. Your rights stay the same in a sale.
GOV.UK says sale items have the same refund rights as full-price items. For most online, phone and mail orders, you can cancel within 14 days of receiving the item. You then have another 14 days to send it back.
There are exceptions. Personalised or custom-made items are only refundable if faulty. So are sealed items that cannot be returned once opened for health or hygiene reasons. Check the seller’s terms before you open the wrapping. A sleep trial is a shop extra, not the law. Read UK bed refund and return rights for the full picture.
Buying in a shop is different. There is no automatic right to return a bed just because you changed your mind.
Where can you compare UK bed sellers?
BedGuide’s shop by type pages list verified UK makers and shops for each bed and mattress type. Each seller is active on Companies House and has a checked website. You can then compare current prices on each seller’s own site.
Payment never changes the A–Z order of those lists.
