These are separate questions. A mattress may be ready to sleep on before its final feel settles. A home trial may have its own start date and conditions too; do not assume it starts when expansion finishes.
Why a universal 24-hour rule is unreliable
Manufacturers and ranges can give different instructions. Silentnight’s Just Sleep page gives a first-use recommendation of at least eight hours, while its general care booklet gives 24 hours for rolled recovery. That difference is a reason to identify the instructions for your exact purchase.
Before delivery, ask the seller when it can be used and how soon it must be unpacked. Plan somewhere else to sleep if its waiting period extends beyond bedtime. Keep the old mattress until the new order and setup are satisfactory where practical.
Unbox without damaging the mattress
Prepare the room and approved base first. Check that the product label matches the size and model you ordered. Take a photograph of visible damage before opening the packaging.
Move the roll into position while it is still manageable, using enough help for its weight. Follow the opening sequence supplied by the maker. Keep cutting tools clear of the fabric and filling, and keep packaging away from children and pets.
Allow room for the mattress to unfold. Check which side faces upwards. Leave the permanent mattress cover in place unless its care instructions explicitly tell you to remove it. Shipping plastic and a sewn product cover are different things.
Let recovery happen on the right support
Use the base specified for the mattress, with the required slats or other support. Keep the room ventilated and follow any temperature guidance. Do not place a heater against the mattress or use steam to accelerate expansion.
Avoid forcing folds flat or repeatedly bending the mattress. A design made for factory compression is not automatically designed to be folded again at home.

What to record if it stays uneven
Wait for the full recovery period stated for the product. Then note when the packaging was opened, the room conditions and the support used. Photograph the whole mattress and the affected area. Ask the seller how it wants height and shape measured.
Send the order number and model details with your description. Keep a record of the advice received. If the mattress has obvious damage or will not lie as the instructions describe, ask for guidance before using it.
Expansion is different from getting used to a mattress
Expansion concerns the product regaining its intended shape after shipping. Mattress break-in concerns early changes in feel and your experience of the new surface. Neither phrase should be used to dismiss an unresolved defect without assessment.

Can I roll a mattress again to return it?
Do not assume so. Factory compression uses specialised equipment. Ask the seller how an expanded mattress should be collected, packaged or returned rather than trying to recreate the original roll.
