Why the edge matters
Edge support affects how usable a mattress feels near its sides. This matters when two people share the width, when you tend to sleep close to the side, or when you briefly sit to get into bed.
Sitting concentrates weight over a smaller area than lying down. The same edge can feel different in those two situations. Do not judge sleeping comfort from a short sit alone, and follow any manufacturer limits on edge sitting.

Try the exact model and firmness you might buy. Check which base it is displayed on, because your home setup may differ.
- Lie in your usual position in the middle, then nearer the side.
- Notice whether you feel comfortably supported or pulled towards the edge.
- Sit briefly as you normally would when getting into bed, if the maker allows it.
- Stand up and notice whether the edge feels stable for that movement.
- Repeat the same checks on the next mattress so your comparison is consistent.
For couples, try the mattress together if possible. Check motion isolation separately. A stable rim does not show how much movement travels across the bed.
Check the base before blaming the mattress
A damaged slat, missing centre leg or incorrectly assembled frame may affect support. Compare your base with the mattress instructions. Check its dimensions and the permitted spacing of supports.
