What makes a bed a sleigh bed?

The curved ends give the bed its name. They may be made from exposed wood or covered in fabric. Some designs have a high, matching footboard. Others use a lower end to create a more open appearance.

The style does not tell you whether the bed has storage or what supports the mattress. Look underneath the decorative shape in the product details. A sleigh frame can use flat slats, sprung slats or another specified support system.

Compare the frame options

Choose appearance and construction separately. A familiar style name does not prove that two frames share the same materials or support.

Measure the full frame in centimetres

Start with the mattress you intend to use. A standard UK double is 135 × 190 cm, a king is 150 × 200 cm, and a super king is 180 × 200 cm. Then obtain the frame’s external width, length and headboard height.

Draw that outline on your room plan. Include the furthest point of each scroll, even if it sits above floor level. Measure from the skirting board or other obstruction that will actually limit placement.

Check door swings, wardrobe doors, drawers and the route around the footboard. Leave the room usable with those things open. Avoid assuming that every king-size frame has the same footprint: the mattress can be identical while the outer bed differs substantially.

Check support and mattress fit

Ask which slats or support insert come with the bed. Check the mattress maker’s rules for slat spacing and centre support against that specification. There is no single permitted slat gap for every mattress.

Confirm whether the centre leg needs contact with the floor and whether the support height can be adjusted. Read the frame’s load limit using its own definition. The curve or thickness of the headboard does not establish a weight rating.

If keeping an existing mattress, record its actual dimensions and depth. Check how high it will sit beside the footboard and how easy it will be to make the bed. See mattress depth and slatted bases.

Plan delivery and ongoing care

Ask for the largest packaged part’s dimensions. A one-piece curved headboard can be harder to carry around a staircase than several straight rails. Measure the route from the entrance to the bedroom, including landings.

Keep the assembly instructions. Use the maker’s care method for the finish or fabric, and check joints at the intervals it specifies. For a storage version, retain the separate mechanism instructions as well.

Before ordering, save the external dimensions, mattress specification, package sizes and what is included. These four details make it easier to compare designs without relying on staged room photographs.
