Why does a mattress slide on the bed?
A mattress slides when the base is too smooth, the slats are too far apart, the plan size is smaller than the frame, or the floor slopes. Fix the cause. A non-slip pad can help a matched pair. It cannot invent missing centimetres.
A UK Double is 135 × 190 cm. A common IKEA or EU double is 140 × 200 cm. That mix leaves about 2.5 cm each side. The mattress will walk. See UK vs EU sizes.

What should I check first?
Measure the mattress and the empty frame in centimetres. Write width × length. If the mattress is smaller, grip products are a plaster.
The National Bed Federation says accepted making spread is plus or minus 20 mm. That note was checked on 28 August 2026. Twenty millimetres can explain a tight King. It cannot explain a 10 cm continental miss.

Ottoman lids and slatted frames with no lip are common slide stages. A wooden bedstead with a ledge holds the plan better.
How do I stop a mattress sliding once the size matches?
- Fit a thin non-slip mattress pad or underlay if the maker allows it.
- Use a frame with a retainer bar or a raised edge.
- Stop using a slippery plastic sheet between mattress and slats unless the maker packed it there.
- Level the bed. A short leg on a slope is a daily shove.
- Close slat gaps if foam is hammocking. Many foam warranties quote a maximum near 7 cm. The leaflet wins.
Do not tape the ticking. Tape can mark the cover and upset a warranty. Do not fold a spring mattress to “wedge” it.
A topper can add height and a new slip plane. If the topper walks, treat it as a second item. Some toppers have their own straps. Those straps hold the topper, not a small mattress in a big frame.
When is sliding a size problem, not a grip problem?
When you mixed UK and EU or IKEA centimetre lines. IKEA UK lists standard UK sizes and extra 80 × 200, 90 × 200 and 140 × 200 products. That guide was checked on 28 August 2026. “Bought at IKEA” is not a size.
When you put a 150 cm UK King on a 160 cm continental frame. The gap is about 5 cm each side. No pad hides that for long.

Who should skip anti-slip products?
Skip them if the centimetres already disagree. Buy the right mattress or the right frame. Skip ranked “best grip mat” lists. We will not write those. Skip medical claims that a pad “aligns the spine”.
