How to measure under-bed storage space

Measure the opening a box must pass through, then the space behind it. A high opening may lead to a lower centre rail. A wide bay may be divided by a support leg. Use the smallest clear measurements along the intended route.

1. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction for clear height.
2. Measure the clear width between the legs or other obstructions.
3. Measure how far a box can slide before meeting a centre leg or wall.
4. Check the room outside the bed so the box can be pulled out fully.
5. Measure the box’s outside dimensions, including its lid, wheels and handles.

A mattress labelled UK Double is 135 × 190 cm, but that is not a storage measurement. The bed’s rails, supports and upholstery change the usable space underneath it.

Will my storage box fit under the bed?

Measure in centimetres. Use the smallest clear space along the route and the box’s full outside dimensions.

To check on paper, subtract the box’s outside dimensions from the clear width, depth and height. Zero leaves no clearance. A negative value means the box is too large on that axis.

The checker compares a rectangular box with one clear rectangular space. It cannot inspect obstructions, movement around a corner, carpet compression or a bed’s load limit. Measure those separately. Turning the box before sliding it in may change the width and depth you need.

A worked measuring example

Suppose the clear opening is 95 cm wide and 22 cm high, with 60 cm of usable depth. A box measuring 90 cm wide, 53 cm deep and 19 cm high leaves 5 cm across the width, 7 cm in depth and 3 cm above it.

Those are total differences, not a promise of a usable fit. Confirm that handles, a bulging lid and the entire sliding route stay inside those measurements. IKEA lists a SKUBB case at 90 × 53 × 19 cm; that is a size example, not a statement that it fits every IKEA or UK Double bed.

Boxes, divan drawers and ottoman storage

Built-in storage is not rated by how much a mattress can support. The load allowed inside a drawer or on a storage floor can be different from the bed’s sleeping load. There is no safe universal drawer allowance to substitute for a missing specification.

Keep access and moving parts clear

For drawers, check whether bedside tables or a wall block their travel. A smaller drawer arrangement may work better near a headboard. For an ottoman, check the opening direction and the maker’s access instructions before placing the bed.

Keep stored items away from hinges, struts, wiring and any marked clearance areas. Do not fill above the permitted level or let a bag catch in the mechanism. Close and operate the bed only as its instructions allow.

What should I store under a bed?

Choose clean, dry items appropriate to the storage compartment. Follow both the bed and container instructions. Avoid treating the void as a place to hide damp bedding or heavy items with no confirmed load allowance.
