How do I choose a sofa bed for my room?

Begin with two plans: the room during the day and the room with the bed open. Include doors, radiators, drawers and the route out of the room. Mark the manufacturer’s stated open footprint on the floor before comparing fabrics.

A sofa’s seat width is not its mattress width. Armrests, hinges and frame parts take up space. A “two-seater” is a seating description; it does not tell you how many people the bed is designed to sleep.

Use sofa bed and guest bed types to identify the mechanism. Then compare the selected model’s complete closed and open dimensions.

Is it for everyday sleeping or occasional guests?

Ask whether the maker describes the model as suitable for everyday sleeping. Do not assume that every fold-out is intended for the same frequency of use. A rarely used bed still needs to suit the person sleeping on it.

Test both jobs separately. Sit as you normally would when reading or watching television. Open it and lie in your normal sleeping position. If two people will use it, compare the sleeping area together. Check the stated load limit and whether it applies to one sleeper or the whole bed.

A truckle is a guest-bed arrangement, rather than the same thing as a folding sofa bed. Read daybeds and truckles if keeping a normal mattress matters to your plan.

Try the operating action where possible. Ask for a demonstration before using unfamiliar locks or catches. Keep the movement path clear and follow the supplied instructions.

What mattress size and thickness will fit?

Read the actual sleeping dimensions in centimetres. A standard UK double mattress measures 135 × 190 cm, but sofa-bed sleeping surfaces can differ. Check sheets against the published width, length and depth rather than the word “double”.

For a folding frame, the mattress must match the maker’s permitted dimensions and construction. Extra thickness can stop the unit closing correctly. Do not replace it with a normal bed mattress unless the sofa-bed maker expressly approves that model and size.

Will the sofa bed get through the door?

Check the largest delivered part, including packaging where the delivery team needs it left on. Measure door openings, stair turns, landings and any lift. Confirm whether legs or arms are designed to be removed for delivery, and who does that work.

What should I check about fabric and care?

Request a sample if available. Look at it in the room’s daylight and evening light. Ask which covers can be removed, which can be washed, and which need professional cleaning. A zip alone does not prove that a cover is washable.

Plan where bedding and loose seat cushions will go while the bed is open. If a model includes storage, confirm its internal dimensions and any load limit. Keep stored items clear of moving parts.
