In short

BS 7177 is the British Standard for how well mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases resist ignition. A home mattress is normally labelled low hazard. That means it is tested against a smouldering cigarette and a match-sized flame. Hotels and hospitals may need higher grades. A pass does not make a mattress fireproof.

Definition. BS 7177 is the British Standard for how well mattresses and bed bases resist catching fire. Home mattresses are usually labelled low hazard.

For mattresses, the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 cover the fillings. The whole mattress is labelled to BS 7177.

Keep the label attached. Charities and resellers use it to check the mattress later.
