In short

UK fitted sheets match mattress plan sizes: Single 90 × 190 cm, Small Double 120 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm. Depth is separate — deep and extra-deep pockets must cover mattress thickness plus any topper. Always check both footprint and pocket depth on the label.

Two measurements, not one

Fitted sheets fail for two different reasons:

  1. Wrong plan size — width × length does not match the mattress
  2. Wrong pocket depth — elastic cannot clear the corner stack

Plan size names follow UK mattress sizes. Vertical fit follows mattress depth including protectors and toppers.

Pocket depth in practice

Add these heights before you buy:

  • Mattress depth (often 20–30 cm for many UK beds)
  • Protector (usually thin)
  • Topper (can add 5–10+ cm)

If the total is 35 cm, a “standard deep” 25 cm pocket will fight you every morning.

Fabric note

Percale vs sateen changes hand-feel, not size. Size is cut and elastic geometry.

Common mistakes

  • Buying King sheets for a 160 cm continental mattress without measuring
  • Ignoring topper height
  • Stretching a Double sheet onto a King “because it almost fits”

A UK King fitted sheet for a 150 × 200 cm mattress. Also match pocket depth to mattress thickness — often 25–30 cm standard deep or 35–40 cm extra deep.
Will a US Queen sheet fit a UK King?
Not reliably. US Queen is about 152 × 203 cm versus UK King 150 × 200 cm. Pocket and cut patterns differ — compare centimetres.
Why does my fitted sheet keep popping off?
Usually the pocket is too shallow for the mattress plus protector and topper, or the sheet footprint is one size too small. Measure stacked height at the corner and check the label depth.
