Ottoman Bed Gas-Strut Mechanics

Entity: ottoman bed lifting mechanism

An ottoman lifts the whole top to open a large storage space under the mattress.

In short

An ottoman bed lifts the mattress on hinges. Gas struts help you raise it. Gas struts are strong rods filled with compressed gas. The strut strength must match the weight of the platform and mattress together. Too weak struts make lifting hard. Too strong struts can slam the lid open or make closing difficult.

How it works

Educational diagram of an ottoman bed with gas struts holding the mattress platform open above a storage void
Gas struts support the hinged mattress platform so the base storage void can be accessed safely.

How a gas strut works

A gas strut is a sealed tube filled with compressed gas. A small oil charge slows the movement. When you lift the lid, the gas pushes the piston rod out. When you close it, you push the gas back in.

The Newton rating must match the weight of the platform and mattress at the hinge. It is not just mattress weight on its own.

Strut mismatch What you may notice
Too weak (too few N) Hard to lift; lid falls shut
Too strong (too many N) Slams open; hard to close
Matched Controlled rise; stays open; closes with modest force

Side-lift versus end-lift

Layout Hinge Clearance needed Common shop names
End-lift At the head Foot of the bed must open End-opening / end-lift ottoman
Side-lift Along one long edge Side opposite the hinge Side-opening / side-lift ottoman

Same strut physics. Different room planning. Side-lift suits beds with a clear long side. End-lift suits beds with blocked sides but open foot space.

Matching struts to mattress weight

Manufacturers list a safe mattress weight range for each strut set. Retail examples often cite roughly 60–75 kg — always use the stated rating. Check before pairing with heavy pocket sprung or hybrid mattresses. See also under-bed storage and drawer layouts for void planning versus drawers.

Safety hardware

Quality ottoman bases include parts that stop the platform from free-falling if a strut fails. Platform stays and hinge stops are part of the mechanical system. They are not optional trim.

Frequently asked questions

Why does mattress weight matter on an ottoman bed?
Gas struts are rated for a total lid weight. That includes the platform and the mattress. Switching from a light foam mattress to a heavy pocket sprung or hybrid mattress can push the mechanism outside its safe range. Opening becomes hard or closing becomes unsafe.
What is the difference between side-opening and end-opening ottomans?
End-opening units hinge at the head. They need clear space at the foot for the raised arc. Side-opening units hinge along one long edge. They need clear space on the side. Both use the same strut physics. The shape changes how you reach the storage.
