A sleigh bed is a bed frame with outward-curving headboard and often footboard. The shape comes from nineteenth-century sleigh and Empire furniture. The scrolled ends add extra length and width beyond the mattress size. Wall and walking clearance must account for the curve, not only the internal mattress cavity.

Form versus function

The sleigh shape is a furniture style. Support still depends on rail strength, centre support and the slatted or sprung insert beneath the mattress — not on the scroll decoration itself.
