> West Yorkshire — especially the Heavy Woollen District around Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike — grew into a major UK bed and mattress cluster through textile skills, spring trades and dense supplier networks. ## Why a cluster formed here

Bed and mattress making needs **wire and springs**, **textiles and fillings**,
**upholstery labour** and **room to warehouse bulky goods**. The Heavy Woollen
District already specialised in cloth and finishing. Over the twentieth century
those skills fed a dense belt of bed factories — still visible in Companies House
registrations around Dewsbury, Batley, Heckmondwike and nearby towns.
