# Pocket Sprung Mattress Explained

> A pocket sprung mattress uses steel coils, each in its own fabric pocket, so neighbouring springs move more independently than in open-coil units. Spring count is the number of pockets in a stated size, not a quality score alone. Wire gauge, coil geometry, zoning and comfort layers also determine support and feel.

## Key facts

- Materials: steel coil springs, non-woven or woven spring pockets, comfort foams or natural fillings, cover fabric
- Typical lifespan: 7–10 years

### Construction layers

- Pocket spring unit: Primary support and contouring
- Comfort / cushioning layers: Pressure distribution above the springs
- Cover and quilting: Surface feel and fabric protection

Key facts:

- How it works: One coil, one pocket — Neighbours move more independently than open coil.
- Spring count: Count ÷ size — 1000 in a Single is denser than 1000 in a Super King.
- Typical lifespan band: 7–10 years — Educational range. Not a warranty promise.
- Slat gap check: Often ≤7 cm — Hybrids with thick foam often need a tighter slat gap.

## What is a pocket sprung mattress?

A pocket sprung mattress uses steel coils, each sewn or welded into its own fabric bag. One coil can compress without dragging every neighbour with it. That is the difference from an [open coil / Bonnell](/mattresses/open-coil-bonnell) unit, where wire links the coils into one grid.

The sleep feel still comes mostly from the layers above the pockets — wool, other fibres, latex or foam. The spring unit is the support engine. The top is the cushion.

## How do pocket springs differ from open coils?

In a pocket unit, load stays more local. In an open-coil lattice, load travels across the linked wires. That is why pocket units usually mould in a smaller patch and transfer less partner movement.

Open coil is not “wrong”. It is a different mechanism, often cheaper to make, and it can feel springier as a whole bed. If partner movement bothers you, pocket or foam-heavy hybrids are the usual next question, not a higher open-coil count.

## Is spring count a quality score?

No. Spring count is the number of pocketed coils in a **stated mattress size**. One thousand springs in a UK Single is a denser pack than one thousand in a UK Super King. Always read count with size. Ask for springs per square metre when you compare different sizes.

Higher counts often use smaller-diameter coils packed more tightly. Some builds add a micro-coil layer above the main unit. That can change surface feel. It does not automatically mean thicker wire or a longer life.

Inspect **wire gauge**, **coil shape**, **zoning**, and **comfort layers**. A lower count with better materials can outlast a high count with thin padding. See [how spring count is marketed](/mattresses/how-spring-count-is-marketed) and [spring count explained](/mattresses/spring-count-explained).

Better-quality pocket units historically used calico or cotton pockets and hand-nested assemblies. Many modern units use non-woven pockets glued in rows. Process differences change airflow and side-to-side response. Neither sentence is a ranking.

## What sits above the spring unit?

Wool, cotton, other fibres, latex, polyfoam or [memory foam](/mattresses/memory-foam). Those layers decide plushness, temperature feel and how much you notice the coils. A [hybrid mattress](/mattresses/hybrid-construction) is a pocket core plus a substantial foam or latex comfort stack.

Zoning means some rows of pockets are firmer — often under the lumbar band. Zoning is a layout, not a medical treatment. See [zoned support](/mattresses/zoned-support).

Edges may use denser pockets, foam rails or [foam encapsulation](/glossary/foam-encapsulation). Sitting on the edge is a different load from sleeping in the middle. See [edge support](/mattresses/edge-support).

## What base should a pocket sprung mattress sit on?

Pocket sprung mattresses are commonly used on [divan bases](/beds/divan-platform-vs-sprung) and [slatted bases](/beds/slatted-bases). For foam-heavy hybrids on slats, check the maker’s maximum slat gap (often around 7 cm) so the comfort layers cannot hammock between laths. The warranty leaflet wins over a website rule of thumb.

A sprung-edge divan adds another spring system under the mattress. That changes edge feel. It is not required for a pocket mattress to “work”.

## Do pocket springs stop roll-together?

They reduce the linked-grid effect that encourages [roll-together](/glossary/roll-together) on open-coil beds. Couples can still share centre sink if the comfort layers are very soft. Independent pockets are not a guarantee of a dead-still surface.

If two body weights are far apart, zip-and-link or different tensions matter more than a bigger count. See [couples and zip-and-link](/mattresses/couples-and-zip-and-link).

## How long does a pocket sprung mattress last?

A typical educational range is about 7–10 years. Body weight, rotation, base support and filling quality change that. It is not a warranty promise. No-turn designs still need rotation — see [why no-turn mattresses](/mattresses/why-no-turn-mattresses) and [turning vs rotating](/care/turning-vs-rotating).

## Frequently asked questions

### What does spring count mean on a pocket sprung mattress?

Spring count is the number of pocketed coils in a stated mattress size. Density matters more than the raw number. One thousand springs in a UK Single is denser than one thousand in a UK Super King. Compare springs per square metre when sizes differ.

### Are pocket sprung mattresses better for couples than open coil?

Pocket sprung units typically transfer less motion than Bonnell open-coil grids because coils are not linked into one wire network. Thick comfort layers can still couple some movement across the surface. Independence is relative, not absolute.

### How is a higher spring count usually achieved?

Higher counts often use smaller-diameter coils packed more densely. Some builds stack micro-coils above a main pocket unit. Count alone does not prove better durability. Wire gauge, tempering and comfort fillings still govern long-term support.

### Do pocket sprung mattresses need a special base?

They are commonly used on divans and slatted frames. Check the maker’s maximum slat gap, especially on hybrids with thick foam above the pockets. A gap that is too wide can let comfort layers hammock.
