# Pocket sprung mattresses
A pocket sprung mattress has steel springs in separate fabric pockets. Each spring moves on its own. UK shops sell them in every size from Small Single to Super King. Compare spring tension, wire gauge, comfort layers and depth, not just the spring count. Then buy from a verified UK maker or shop.

## What are pocket sprung mattresses?
A pocket sprung mattress has a core of steel springs. Each spring sits in its own fabric bag, called a pocket. The springs are not wired together. So one spring can squash down without pulling its neighbours down with it.

Comfort layers sit on top of the springs. They can be foam, wool, cotton or other fillings. The springs give support. The layers on top decide how soft the surface feels. That is why two “medium” pocket sprung mattresses can feel quite different.

Many UK factories and bed shops make and sell pocket sprung mattresses. You will find them in every UK size, on divan bases, slatted frames and ottoman beds. A spring count on the label is only one part of the story.

## What types of pocket sprung mattresses are there?

### Traditional pocket sprung
Springs with natural fillings such as wool, cotton or horsehair on top. Many are hand-tufted, which means the layers are held with stitched tufts. Some are two-sided and need turning.

### Pocket sprung with memory foam
A memory foam layer sits over the springs. The surface moulds slowly, while the springs push back underneath. Many shops sell this build as a hybrid.

### Mini pocket or layered springs
A layer of very small springs sits above the main spring unit. It adds give at the surface. It also makes the headline spring count much bigger.

### No-turn pocket sprung
One-sided mattresses with all the comfort layers on top. You rotate them head to foot, but you do not flip them over.

### Zoned pocket springs
Springs of different tension in different areas, such as firmer springs under the hips. Ask the maker how many zones there are and where they sit.

### Split or dual tension
Two halves with different spring tensions, made for couples who like different firmness. Often made as zip-and-link pairs.

### Pillow top or box top
An extra padded layer sewn on top of the mattress. It softens the surface feel. It also adds depth, so check your sheet pocket size.

## What are the pros and cons of pocket sprung mattresses?

### Good points

- Each spring moves on its own, so less movement passes to a partner than on a linked open coil mattress.
- Air can move around the springs, which many people find cooler than a solid foam core.
- Made in every UK size and in soft, medium and firm tensions.
- Many UK factories make them, so it is easy to compare models and buy close to home.
- Two-sided models can be turned as well as rotated, which spreads the wear.

### Things to weigh up

- Heavier than most foam mattresses, so they are harder to lift, turn and carry upstairs.
- Traditional models usually arrive flat and should not be folded to get round tight corners.
- Headline spring counts are easy to inflate with mini springs, so they are hard to compare between shops.
- Natural fillings settle at first, which can leave shallow dips and needs regular rotating.

## What sizes do pocket sprung mattresses come in?
 Pocket sprung mattresses come in all the standard UK sizes: Small Single 75 × 190 cm, Single 90 × 190 cm, Small Double 120 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm.

Depth varies a lot, from slim mattresses for bunk beds to deep pillow-top models. Measure the depth in centimetres before you buy fitted sheets, or put the mattress on an ottoman or a bunk bed.

A spring count only means something next to the size it describes. One thousand springs in a Single sit much closer together than one thousand springs in a Super King.

Super Kings are often made as two zip-and-link halves. This can help on narrow stairs, and lets each side have its own tension.

| UK size | Mattress size | Shop name |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small Single | 75 × 190 cm | 2ft 6 |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 3ft |
| Small Double | 120 × 190 cm | 4ft |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 4ft 6 |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 5ft |
| Super King | 180 × 200 cm | 6ft |
| Emperor (common) | 200 × 200 cm | 6 ft 6 |

Frames and headboards can be bigger than the mattress. Ask for the outer size in centimetres.

## What should you check before buying pocket sprung mattresses?

- Spring count, and which UK size it is quoted for. Ask whether it includes mini springs in the comfort layer.
- Spring tension (soft, medium or firm) and the maker’s body-weight guidance for that tension.
- Wire gauge: thicker wire usually holds more load and feels firmer underneath.
- Comfort layers: the name, material and depth in centimetres of each layer above the springs.
- One-sided or two-sided: whether it needs turning as well as rotating.
- Edge support, if you often sit on the side of the bed to dress.
- The base the maker approves, and the widest slat gap allowed by the warranty.
- A permanent UK fire-safety label, usually naming BS 7177, plus the trial, warranty and returns terms.

## Will pocket sprung mattresses fit your room?
A pocket sprung mattress fits any bed frame of the same UK size. Measure the inside of the frame in centimetres, because some frames made for other countries are 200 cm long.

On an ottoman bed, check the gas struts are rated for the mattress weight. Pocket sprung mattresses can be heavy.

On a bunk bed or cabin bed, use the maximum mattress depth the bed maker gives, so the guard rail stays high enough.

Plan it with the [bed room planner](/tools/bed-room-planner/).

## Delivery and assembly
Most traditional pocket sprung mattresses arrive flat, wrapped in plastic. Measure doorways, stair width and tight turns before delivery day.

Do not fold a spring mattress to get it round a corner unless the maker says you can. Folding can bend or damage the springs.

Some pocket sprung and hybrid models arrive rolled in a box. Give them the recovery time the maker states before you sleep on them.

Ask the seller whether delivery includes carrying it to your room, and whether they can take your old mattress away.

Check your doors, stairs and turns with the [delivery fit checker](/tools/delivery-fit-checker/).

## How do you look after pocket sprung mattresses?
Use a washable mattress protector to keep the surface clean and dry.

If the label gives no routine, rotate head to foot every week for the first three months, then every month. Turn it over too only if it is two-sided.

Natural fillings often settle into shallow dips at first. That is usually normal. Check the warranty wording for what counts as a fault.

Keep it on an even, supportive base. Do not stand, jump or kneel in one spot on the mattress.

##
Frequently asked questions

### Is a pocket sprung mattress worth it?
It depends on the model and on what you like. Pocket springs feel bouncier and push back faster than memory foam, and air moves around them. Compare tension, layers and depth for the exact model, and try it in a shop if you can.

### How many springs should a pocket sprung mattress have?
There is no single right number. The National Bed Federation says counts often run from about 600–800 up to 2,500. Ask which UK size the count is for, and whether it includes mini springs in the comfort layer.

### Is pocket sprung better than memory foam?
Neither suits everyone. Pocket springs feel bouncier and let air move. Memory foam moulds slowly around you and passes on little movement. Many hybrid mattresses use both. Compare the exact builds and try the feel.

### What is the difference between pocket sprung and open coil?
Open coil springs are joined by wire into one grid, so they move together. Pocket springs sit in separate fabric bags, so pressure stays nearer where you press. Less movement usually travels across the bed.

### Do you need to turn a pocket sprung mattress?
Only if it is two-sided. Two-sided models are flipped and rotated. One-sided, no-turn models are only rotated head to foot. The care label tells you which, and how often.

### Can a pocket sprung mattress go on an ottoman or adjustable bed?
On an ottoman, yes, if the mattress weight sits within the gas strut rating. On an adjustable bed, only if the mattress maker says that model can bend. Ask for both answers in writing before you buy.

### How long does a pocket sprung mattress last?
Many UK guides give about 7 to 10 years as a typical range. Body weight, base support, rotation and care all change that. It is a guide, not a warranty promise.

### Where can I buy a pocket sprung mattress made in the UK?
Many UK factories make pocket sprung mattresses. The list on this page shows verified companies whose checked ranges include them. Check where the exact model is made on the seller’s own website before you buy.
