# Gel Foam Mattresses: How to Check Cooling Claims

> Gel foam mattresses contain gel within or alongside a foam layer. A cooling claim may instead describe the cover, air channels or another part of the bed. Check which part was tested, what it was compared with and for how long. A cool first touch does not establish how the complete bed feels overnight.

## Key facts

- Materials: gel-infused viscoelastic foam, open-cell polyurethane, phase change textiles, pocket spring cores

Sources:

- [Silentnight: UltraGel Cool-to-touch 3000](https://www.silentnight.co.uk/silentnight-geltex-pocket-3000-mattress.html) — A manufacturer example separating a gel comfort layer from a cool-to-touch surface fabric. Performance language is the maker’s claim. Checked 2026-09-08.
- [TEMPUR UK: PRO SmartCool range](https://uk.tempur.com/mattresses/tempur-pro-smartcool/) — An example of a manufacturer describing cooling technology in a removable cover; not an independent whole-night comparison. Checked 2026-09-08.

## What does gel foam mean in a mattress?

Gel foam describes a material detail, not the full mattress construction. The gel may be mixed through foam or used in a separate layer. The support underneath may be foam or springs. Ask for a layer list before comparing two models with the same cooling label.

Silentnight’s UltraGel range illustrates why this matters: its product description discusses a gel layer and a separate surface fabric. TEMPUR’s SmartCool range describes technology in the cover. Those are different parts of a mattress. Neither name alone is a whole-bed temperature measurement.

## Cooling mattress claims: what to check

| Wording on the page | What it describes | Useful follow-up question |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gel-infused foam | An ingredient or layer | Where is the gel, and how was the finished mattress tested? |
| Open-cell foam | Foam structure | Was airflow measured on a foam sample or the complete mattress? |
| Ventilated or channelled | Holes or cut paths | Which layers have them, and what sits above them? |
| Cool-to-touch | The initial surface sensation | How long was the test, and was a sheet used? |
| Phase-change material | Material designed to absorb and release heat as its state changes | What conditions activate it, and how does it reset? |
| Breathable cover | A fabric claim | Does it refer to air movement, moisture transfer, or both? |

These descriptions can be useful. They do not share a single performance scale. A percentage improvement also needs a named comparison and a test method to mean much.

## Does gel foam keep you cool all night?

You cannot answer that from the gel label alone. A hand touching an uncovered sample tests something different from a person lying under bedding for several hours. Ask whether the evidence measures surface temperature, heat flow or a sleeper’s reported comfort. Those are different outcomes.

Check who carried out the test, which model and firmness were used, and whether the report explains its limits. A test of one foam piece should not be presented as proof that every mattress containing it performs the same way.

BedGuide has not carried out overnight temperature tests on these ranges. The linked manufacturer pages explain the claims and components, rather than establish a winner.

## Compare the setup you will actually use

Write down the mattress model, protector, sheet, topper and duvet you intend to use. The cover in a showroom may feel different once those layers are added. Ask whether your planned protector or topper affects the cooling feature or the care requirements.

If you already own the bed, use the practical checks in [mattress heat and cooling](/care/mattress-heat-and-cooling). Keep a simple note of the room conditions and bedding. Changing one item at a time makes your own comparison easier to interpret.

## Questions to ask before ordering

1. Which exact layer or cover provides the claimed cooling effect?
2. Is there a test report for this model, with a named comparison?
3. Does the reported result cover first contact or longer use?
4. Which sheets, protectors and base were used during testing?
5. Can the cover be washed or replaced, and what instructions apply?
6. What are the written trial and return conditions if the feel does not suit you?

Compare [memory foam construction](/mattresses/memory-foam) and [hybrid mattresses](/mattresses/hybrid-construction) separately from cooling terminology. For powered systems, read [cooling pads and systems](/environment/cooling-pads-and-systems). They introduce equipment and maintenance requirements that a passive mattress layer does not have.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a gel foam mattress stay cold all night?

The gel label alone cannot establish that. Check the exact model’s evidence, test duration and bedding conditions. First-touch cooling and comfort over several hours are different things.

### Is gel foam the same as a cool-to-touch cover?

No. Gel foam describes a foam ingredient or layer. A cool-to-touch claim may refer to fabric at the surface. A mattress can contain both, so ask which component each claim describes.

### What evidence should I ask for about a cooling mattress?

Ask for the tested model, comparison product, test method, duration and conditions. Check whether a sheet and protector were used, and whether the result concerns a sample or the complete mattress.
