# Mattress Tufting

> Tufting pulls cords or buttons through a mattress from face to face. It locks fillings so they cannot migrate. Hand-tufting creates deep dimples and full-depth ties. Micro-quilting mainly stitches the cover and thin toppers without through-ties. Tufting controls filling migration. Quilting mainly controls surface attachment.

**Definition.** Tufting secures mattress fillings by stitching cords or buttons through the full depth. It compresses layers so fillings cannot shift or migrate.

Also called: hand tufting, through-tufting.

Hand-tufted mattresses show recessed tuft points where the cord tension compresses
the full stack. Micro-quilted surfaces lack those through-depth ties and should not
be described as traditionally tufted.
