# Edge Support

> Edge support describes how the outer edge of a mattress behaves when you sit or lie near it. Some mattresses use foam borders, reinforced springs or a firmer row of coils around the rim. A firm centre does not guarantee a firm edge. Test sitting and lying separately, and check the base underneath.

**Definition.** Edge support is how firm and stable the outer rim of a mattress stays when you sit or lie near it.

Also called: mattress edge, reinforced edge, foam border.

Good edge support can make the full width of the mattress usable. It also helps
if you sit on the side of the bed to get up.

A soft or sagging base can make any edge feel weaker. Check the base too.
