# Crib 5 (Fire Test)

> Crib 5 is ignition source 5 in UK furniture fire testing: a small stack of burning wood used as a test flame. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 use it to test foam fillings. The BS 7177 medium hazard grade also adds a source 5 test. Home mattresses are usually labelled low hazard instead.

**Definition.** Crib 5 is ignition source 5: a small stack of burning wood used as a test flame for furniture fillings and some mattresses.

Also called: Crib 5 test, ignition source 5, crib five.

Crib 5 is a lab test, not a promise that an item will not burn.

Keep heaters, candles and smoking materials away from beds and bedding.
