# Why a Mattress Slides and How to Stop It

> A mattress slides when the base is too smooth, slats are too far apart, the plan size is smaller than the frame, or the bed is on a slope. Fix the cause. A non-slip pad or retainer can help. A UK Double on a 140 cm frame will walk. Measure centimetres before you buy pads.

Key facts:

- Plan size: Measure first — A 135 cm mattress on a 140 cm frame will walk.
- Pad or lip: Then grip — Non-slip helps a matched pair. It does not invent width.

- [IKEA UK mattress size guide](https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/rooms/bedroom/mattress-size-guide-pub63d34391/) — Lists UK sizes and extra 80 × 200, 90 × 200 and 140 × 200 lines. Mixing those plans is a common reason a mattress walks. Checked 2026-08-28.
- [National Bed Federation — regulations and standards](https://www.bedfed.org.uk/resources/regulations-standards/) — Industry size spread is ±20 mm. That does not turn a UK Double into a 140 cm EU mattress. Checked 2026-08-28.

## Why does a mattress slide on the bed?

A mattress slides when the base is too smooth, the slats are too far apart, the plan size is smaller than the frame, or the floor slopes. Fix the cause. A non-slip pad can help a matched pair. It cannot invent missing centimetres.

A UK Double is 135 × 190 cm. A common IKEA or EU double is 140 × 200 cm. That mix leaves about 2.5 cm each side. The mattress will walk. See [UK vs EU sizes](/sizing/uk-vs-eu-sizes).

This page is a mechanics checklist. It is not a pad shop.

## What should I check first?

Measure the mattress and the empty frame in centimetres. Write width × length. If the mattress is smaller, grip products are a plaster.

The National Bed Federation says accepted making spread is plus or minus 20 mm. That note was checked on 28 August 2026. Twenty millimetres can explain a tight King. It cannot explain a 10 cm continental miss.

| Cause | What you see | First fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Smaller mattress than frame | Gaps at the sides or foot | Correct size, or a frame that matches |
| Smooth platform or plastic slats | Mattress creeps when you sit | Non-slip underlay the maker allows |
| Wide slat gaps | Foam dips between laths and walks | Closer slats or a platform — [compatibility](/care/mattress-base-compatibility) |
| Sloped floor or castors | Whole bed drifts | Level the feet; lock wheels |
| Fitted sheet tugging | Corners pop and the core shifts | Right [sheet size and pocket](/sizing/uk-fitted-sheet-sizes) |

Ottoman lids and slatted frames with no lip are common slide stages. A wooden bedstead with a ledge holds the plan better.

## How do I stop a mattress sliding once the size matches?

1. Fit a thin non-slip mattress pad or underlay if the maker allows it.
2. Use a frame with a retainer bar or a raised edge.
3. Stop using a slippery plastic sheet between mattress and slats unless the maker packed it there.
4. Level the bed. A short leg on a slope is a daily shove.
5. Close slat gaps if foam is hammocking. Many foam warranties quote a maximum near 7 cm. The leaflet wins.

Do not tape the ticking. Tape can mark the cover and upset a [warranty](/care/what-voids-a-mattress-warranty). Do not fold a spring mattress to “wedge” it.

A topper can add height and a new slip plane. If the topper walks, treat it as a second item. Some toppers have their own straps. Those straps hold the topper, not a small mattress in a big frame.

## When is sliding a size problem, not a grip problem?

When you mixed UK and EU or IKEA centimetre lines. IKEA UK lists standard UK sizes and extra 80 × 200, 90 × 200 and 140 × 200 products. That guide was checked on 28 August 2026. “Bought at IKEA” is not a size.

When you put a 150 cm UK King on a 160 cm continental frame. The gap is about 5 cm each side. No pad hides that for long.

When you use a sofa-bed cavity that is 140 × 200 cm with a UK Double mattress. See [sofa beds](/beds/sofa-beds-and-guest-beds).

## Who should skip anti-slip products?

Skip them if the centimetres already disagree. Buy the right mattress or the right frame. Skip ranked “best grip mat” lists. We will not write those. Skip medical claims that a pad “aligns the spine”.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does my mattress keep sliding?

Usually the base is smooth, the slats are wide, the mattress is smaller than the frame, or the bed sits on a slope. A UK Double (135 cm) on a 140 cm frame leaves a gap each side. Measure before you buy a pad.

### Will a non-slip underlay stop a sliding mattress?

It can help on a smooth platform. It cannot fix a 5 cm size miss or slats so wide the foam hammocks. Fix the plan size and the slat gap first.

### Can I use straps or clips on any bed?

Only if the maker allows them. Some clips mark the ticking and worry a warranty. A frame with a lip or retainer bar is cleaner than tape on the quilt.

### Does a fitted sheet stop a mattress sliding?

No. A tight sheet can even tug the corners. Sheets match the mattress. They do not glue it to the slats.
