# Second-Hand Mattress Hygiene and Safety

> A used mattress can carry stains, dust mites, wear and unknown fire-label history. You cannot deep-clean a foam or spring core the way you wash a sheet. If you still consider one, check the fire label, sag, smell, stains and base match — then add a washable protector. When in doubt, skip it.

## Why used mattresses are different

Sheets wash. Mattress cores mostly do not. Fluids, allergens and permanent compression can sit inside layers you cannot launder.

## Strong reasons to say no

2. Strong persistent smell after airing
3. Visible mould, heavy stains or pest signs

### Can I steam-clean a used mattress enough to make it like new?

Surface cleaning can help odours and surface dust, but steam and sprays do not reset years of compression inside foams and fibres. They also must not soak the core. Cleaning is not the same as a new, labelled product.
