# Mattress Certifications and Labels Explained

> Certifications on mattresses and bedding are third-party checks with narrow scopes. OEKO-TEX looks at harmful substances in textiles. CertiPUR-US and similar foam programmes check foam emissions and banned substances. GOTS covers organic textile chains. “Orthopaedic,” “natural,” and “hypoallergenic” are often marketing words, not medical grades. Read what each label proves — and what it does not.

Certificate numbers and scopes matter. Ask which **part** of the bed is certified.

## UK fire labels first

## Textile chemistry labels

Programmes such as OEKO-TEX help you compare **textile** chemistry claims. They do not rate soft/medium/firm feel.

## Foam and latex claims

Foam certifications limit certain substances under their rules. Natural latex may carry separate agricultural or processing claims. Always match the certificate to the layer named on the ticket.

## Words that need extra care

- **Natural** — can mean plant-based fibres, latex, or just undyed fabric
- **Organic** — needs a named organic standard for the certified parts

## Common mistakes

- Treating any logo as a quality ranking

No. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests for a list of harmful substances in textiles. Organic claims need a separate organic standard such as GOTS for the textile chain described on the certificate.

### Does a foam certification mean zero smell?
