# How to Make a Mattress Firmer or Softer

> You can often soften a sleep surface with a topper or thicker protector. You cannot truly firm a soft support core with bedding alone. A board over a flexing base can firm the whole system. Wrong spring tension for your weight needs a different mattress, not another quilt. Check surface feel, base flex, and support first.
