# Wooden beds
Wooden beds are bed frames built from solid wood, such as oak or pine, or from wood veneer over board. The mattress rests on slats between the side rails. In the UK they come in all standard sizes. Check which parts are solid wood, the slat gap, the centre rail and the frame’s outside size.

## What are wooden beds?
A wooden bed is a frame with a headboard, side rails and often a footboard. The mattress sits on slats (flat strips of wood) laid across the frame.

Not every wooden-looking bed is solid wood. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood glued over board. Wood-effect foil is a printed finish. Many frames mix these.

Wider beds have a centre rail down the middle with legs to the floor. It shortens each slat so the base bends less.

Slats can be solid (flat and rigid) or sprung (gently bowed in flexible holders). Sprung slats add a little give under the mattress. Solid slats keep it firmer.

## What types of wooden beds are there?

### Solid oak beds
Oak is a hardwood with a strong grain. Oak frames are heavy and often finished with oil, wax or lacquer.

### Pine beds
Pine is a lighter softwood. It is often painted or waxed. Pine shows dents more easily than oak.

### Veneered and painted frames
A real-wood veneer or paint over engineered board. Lighter and often lower in cost than solid wood.

### Wooden sleigh beds
Curved headboard and footboard. The curves add length beyond the mattress.

### Four-poster beds
A tall post at each corner. Measure your ceiling height before choosing one.

### Low and platform beds
A low frame that sits close to the floor, often with a wide slatted base and a simple headboard.

### Wooden beds with drawers
Drawers built into the side rails or foot end give storage in a wooden frame.

## What are the pros and cons of wooden beds?

### Good points

- A natural, long-lasting material that can often be refinished.
- Slatted bases let air move under the mattress.
- Many styles, from Scandi and Shaker to farmhouse and four-poster.
- Space under many frames for storage boxes.

### Things to weigh up

- Solid wood frames are heavy to move and carry upstairs.
- Joints can loosen and creak over time if bolts are not checked.
- Wide slat gaps may not suit some foam or hybrid mattresses.
- Footboards, posts and curves add size beyond the mattress.

## What sizes do wooden beds come in?
 Wooden beds are made for UK mattress sizes: Single 90 × 190 cm, Small Double 120 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm.

The frame is bigger than the mattress. Rails, posts and footboards often add several centimetres each way. Sleigh beds add more length.

Check the inside size of the frame (the mattress space) is right for a UK mattress. Imported frames may be made for EU sizes, such as 140 × 200 cm.

| UK size | Mattress size | Shop name |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small Single | 75 × 190 cm | 2ft 6 |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 3ft |
| Small Double | 120 × 190 cm | 4ft |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 4ft 6 |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 5ft |
| Super King | 180 × 200 cm | 6ft |
| Emperor (common) | 200 × 200 cm | 6 ft 6 |

Frames and headboards can be bigger than the mattress. Ask for the outer size in centimetres.

## What should you check before buying wooden beds?

- Material: ask which parts are solid wood, veneer or board, especially the side rails that carry the weight.
- Slat gap: measure the clear gap between slats. It must meet your mattress maker’s limit.
- Centre rail: Double and larger frames need a centre rail with legs that reach the floor.
- Load limit: ask for the weight limit for the exact size, and whether it includes the mattress.
- Outside size: ask for the full width and length, including footboard and posts.
- Under-bed height: measure the clear gap if you want storage boxes underneath.
- Finish: oiled, waxed, lacquered or painted. Each needs different care.

## Will wooden beds fit your room?
Mark the full frame outline on the floor with tape, including any footboard or posts.

Four-poster beds need ceiling height. Sleigh beds need extra length at both ends.

Leave about 50–60 cm to walk beside the bed if your room allows.

Plan it with the [bed room planner](/tools/bed-room-planner/).

## Delivery and assembly
Most wooden beds arrive flat-packed with rails, slats and a bag of fittings. Solid oak parts can be very heavy.

Measure doorways and stairs against the longest part, usually the side rails or the headboard.

Build the frame on its final spot. Fit the centre rail and its legs before laying the slats.

Keep the fittings bag and instructions. Label the bolts if you take the bed apart to move house.

Check your doors, stairs and turns with the [delivery fit checker](/tools/delivery-fit-checker/).

## How do you look after wooden beds?
Check and tighten bolts a few weeks after assembly, then now and then after that.

Use the cleaner the finish needs. Oil suits oiled wood, not paint or lacquer.

Keep the bed away from radiators and strong sun, which can dry or fade wood.

Wipe spills quickly. Water left standing can mark some finishes.

##
Frequently asked questions

### Is solid wood better than veneer for a bed?
Not always. Solid wood can be refinished and is usually heavier. Veneer over good board can be stable and lighter. Strength depends on the rails, joints and centre support, not just the material name.

### Do wooden beds need a centre support?
Most Double, King and Super King frames have a centre rail with legs to the floor. It stops the slats bowing in the middle. Check it is fitted and its legs touch the floor.

### What slat gap is right for my mattress?
Follow your mattress maker’s rules. Foam and hybrid mattresses often need closer slats. Measure the clear gap between slat edges, in the middle of the bed as well as the ends.

### Why does my wooden bed creak?
Creaks usually come from a loose joint, a slat rubbing or a leg off the floor. Find where the sound starts, then tighten fittings as the maker’s instructions say.

### Is oak or pine better for a bed frame?
Oak is a dense hardwood that resists dents and is heavy. Pine is a lighter softwood, often painted. Both can make sturdy beds when the rails and joints are well made.

### Will a UK mattress fit an imported wooden bed?
Only if the inside of the frame matches. A UK Double is 135 × 190 cm. Many EU frames take 140 × 200 cm. Check the frame’s mattress size in centimetres.

### Can you paint a wooden bed frame?
Often, yes, but check the finish first. Lacquer, wax and oil each need different preparation. Clean and lightly sand the surface, then use a paint made for furniture. Follow the paint maker’s instructions and let it dry fully.

### What are sprung slats?
Sprung slats are gently bowed strips of wood held in flexible end caps. They flatten a little under weight and spring back. They add some give under the mattress, which can make it feel slightly softer.

### Are wooden beds good for small rooms?
A simple frame without a footboard takes little extra space. Raised frames also leave room for storage boxes underneath. Avoid big footboards and posts in a tight room.

### Where can I buy wooden beds in the UK?
BedGuide lists 15 verified UK companies that sell wooden beds, including 2 factories and manufacturers. Each is active on Companies House and has a checked website. Compare prices on each seller’s own page.
