# TV Beds and Media Beds Explained

> A TV bed or media bed hides a screen in the footboard and lifts it with a powered mechanism. The mattress and base are still ordinary sleep furniture. You need power nearby, clear foot space and safe cable routing. Treat the TV lift as extra furniture hardware — not a different mattress type.

Structural components: bed frame or divan chassis, footboard media cavity, powered lift mechanism, remote or switch control.

## What makes it a media bed

In short: a footboard cavity plus a powered lift for a screen.

Everything else follows normal bed rules:

- Match [UK size](/sizing/uk-standard-bed-sizes) in centimetres  
- Choose a [mattress](/mattresses/how-to-choose-a-mattress) as usual  
- Plan [room footprint](/sizing/bed-footprint-and-access) for the deeper foot end

3. Cable path that will not snag the lift

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a TV bed a type of mattress?

No. A TV bed is a bed frame or divan with a media footboard. You still choose a separate mattress size and construction, such as pocket sprung or foam.

### Can a TV bed also have ottoman storage?

Some designs combine both. The lift for the screen and the lift for the mattress platform are different mechanisms. Check clearance for each.
