# Ottoman beds
Ottoman beds lift up to show one large storage space under the mattress. Gas struts help you raise the platform. In the UK they come in sizes from Small Single 75 × 190 cm to Super King 180 × 200 cm. Check the lift direction, the mattress weight range and the room you need when it opens.

## What are ottoman beds?
An ottoman bed has a mattress platform that opens on hinges. Under it is a storage space. The mattress usually stays on the platform while you lift it.

Gas struts (springy metal arms filled with gas) help you lift the platform and hold it open. They take much of the weight, so the lid does not slam shut.

Ottoman describes the storage, not the look. An ottoman can be a fabric divan box, an upholstered frame with a tall headboard, or a wooden bed. It tells you nothing about how the mattress will feel.

## What types of ottoman beds are there?

### End-lift ottoman
The hinges sit near the head of the bed. You stand at the foot and lift the platform up and towards the headboard. This suits beds with bedside tables close on both sides.

### Side-lift ottoman
The hinges run along one long side. You lift from the other side. This suits rooms where the foot of the bed faces a wardrobe or a wall.

### Ottoman divan
A fabric-covered box base with a lifting top instead of drawers. It looks like a standard divan and often takes a separate headboard.

### Upholstered ottoman bed frame
A padded frame with a fixed headboard, often in velvet, chenille or linen-look fabric. Styles include Chesterfield (deep buttons), wingback (side panels) and panelled headboards.

### TV ottoman bed
Some TV beds hide a screen lift in the footboard and also open as an ottoman. The TV lift and the storage lift are separate mechanisms.

### Half-lift and split ottomans
Some larger beds lift only part of the platform, or open as two halves. This keeps each part lighter but makes a smaller opening.

## What are the pros and cons of ottoman beds?

### Good points

- The biggest storage space of any common bed type. You can store bulky items such as spare duvets, pillows and suitcases.
- Storage is enclosed, so it stays cleaner than boxes pushed under a bed frame.
- No drawers need space beside the bed. That helps where bedside tables block drawer runs.
- Comes in every UK size and many fabrics and styles.

### Things to weigh up

- You must lift the whole platform to reach anything. It is slower than a drawer for items you use every day.
- The gas struts must suit your mattress weight. A very heavy or very light mattress can make the lid hard to control.
- The lid needs space and height to open. Sloped ceilings, low windows and lights can get in the way.
- Ottomans are heavy and often arrive in several large boxes. Assembly takes time.
- Moving parts can trap fingers. Keep children and pets clear when the lid moves.

## What sizes do ottoman beds come in?
 UK ottoman beds are made to standard mattress sizes: Small Single 75 × 190 cm, Single 90 × 190 cm, Small Double 120 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm.

Those numbers are for the mattress. The frame is usually larger. Padding, rails and the headboard add width and length.

Ask for three extra sizes: the outside size of the frame, the height with the lid fully open, and the storage depth in centimetres.

King and Super King ottomans often have more storage area, but the lid is heavier. Check the gas strut rating for that exact size.

| UK size | Mattress size | Shop name |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small Single | 75 × 190 cm | 2ft 6 |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 3ft |
| Small Double | 120 × 190 cm | 4ft |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 4ft 6 |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 5ft |
| Super King | 180 × 200 cm | 6ft |
| Emperor (common) | 200 × 200 cm | 6 ft 6 |

Frames and headboards can be bigger than the mattress. Ask for the outer size in centimetres.

## What should you check before buying ottoman beds?

- Lift direction: end-lift or side-lift. Stand where you would lift it in your room before you choose.
- Mattress weight range: ask for the approved range for the gas struts. There is no single safe weight for every ottoman.
- Opening space: check headroom with the lid fully open, including sloped ceilings, shelves and pendant lights.
- Storage depth and floor: ask for the depth in cm and whether the storage floor is a solid board or open fabric.
- Support under the mattress: slats or a solid deck. Check it matches your mattress maker’s base rules.
- Storage load limit: the storage floor may carry less weight than the sleeping platform. Ask for both limits.
- Fire safety: upholstered ottomans must meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. Ask to see the label.
- Delivery and parts: how many boxes, the largest box size, and whether replacement gas struts are available.

## Will ottoman beds fit your room?
Draw the bed’s full outline on the floor with tape. Then mark where you will stand to lift the lid.

For an end-lift, you need clear space at the foot of the bed. For a side-lift, you need clear space along the opening side.

Leave about 50–60 cm to walk around the bed if your room allows. Ottomans are a good choice in small rooms because they replace a chest of drawers or under-bed boxes.

Plan it with the [bed room planner](/tools/bed-room-planner/).

## Delivery and assembly
Most ottomans arrive flat-packed in several boxes. The heaviest part is often the lid with the struts fitted.

Measure doorways, the stair width and any tight turn on the landing. Ask for the size of the largest box.

Assembly usually needs two adults. Fit the gas struts last and follow the maker’s order of steps. Some sellers offer a fitting service.

Check your doors, stairs and turns with the [delivery fit checker](/tools/delivery-fit-checker/).

## How do you look after ottoman beds?
Do not overload the storage floor. Spread weight evenly and keep heavy items near the edges, where the frame is strongest.

If the lid starts to drop or springs up too fast, stop using it. Ask the seller for the correct replacement gas struts. Do not guess a strut rating.

Vacuum the fabric with a soft brush and follow the care label. Keep fingers away from the hinges when closing.

##
Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between an end-lift and a side-lift ottoman?
An end-lift opens from the foot of the bed, with hinges near the headboard. A side-lift opens from one long side. Choose the one you can stand at and reach in your room.

### Can you put any mattress on an ottoman bed?
Most standard mattresses fit, but weight matters. The gas struts are made for a weight range. A very heavy mattress can make the lid hard to hold open. Check the approved weight range and the support surface.

### Are ottoman beds strong?
They can be, but strength depends on the frame, the support deck and correct assembly, not the word ottoman. Ask for the sleeping load limit and the separate storage floor limit for the exact model and size.

### Are ottoman beds hard to lift?
They should lift smoothly when the gas struts match the mattress weight. If the lid feels very heavy or flies up, the struts may not suit your mattress. Ask the seller before using it again.

### Is an ottoman better than a divan with drawers?
It depends on what you store. An ottoman holds more bulky things in one space. Drawers are quicker for small items you use every day. Drawers also need space to slide out beside the bed.

### Do ottoman beds come in small sizes?
Yes. Ottomans are made from Small Single (75 × 190 cm) and Single (90 × 190 cm) up to Super King (180 × 200 cm). Smaller sizes have lighter lids but less storage.

### How much storage does an ottoman bed have?
It varies by model. The storage area is close to the mattress size, but the depth differs. Ask the seller for the storage depth in centimetres and check any dividers inside.

### Is an ottoman bed safe for children’s rooms?
Moving lids can trap fingers. Follow the maker’s warnings, keep children clear when the lid moves, and never let anyone climb into the storage space.

### Where can I buy ottoman beds in the UK?
