## What are kids beds?
A kids bed is any bed made for a child’s room. Some are ordinary single beds. Others raise the mattress to free up floor space for storage, a desk or play.

Raised beds have extra rules. Guardrails, ladders and mattress depth all matter. The maker’s instructions say who can use each bed and how.

Choose a bed that fits the room now and later. A raised bed that suits a younger child may need changing as they grow.

Most children move from a cot or cot bed to a Small Single or Single. Many keep a Single into their teens. Exact centimetres matter more than the age on a label.

## What types of kids beds are there?

### Single beds
A standard bed at normal height. It takes a UK Single mattress, 90 × 190 cm. It is simple and lasts as the child grows.

### Toddler beds
A low bed for young children moving out of a cot. Many take a cot bed mattress. Check the exact size on the frame.

### Cabin beds
A raised bed with drawers, cupboards or shelves underneath. The mattress sits at a medium height.

### Mid sleepers
Higher than a cabin bed, with space below for storage, a play den or a pull-out desk. A short ladder reaches the top.

### High sleepers
The bed sits high, often with a desk or sofa underneath. They need more ceiling height and an older child.

### Bunk beds
Two beds stacked one above the other. They save floor space when two children share a room.

## What are the pros and cons of kids beds?

### Good points

- A themed or colourful bed can make a child’s room feel like their own.
- Raised beds free up floor space in small bedrooms.
- Cabin beds and mid sleepers add storage without extra furniture.
- A high sleeper can fit a desk underneath for homework.
- Most kids beds use common Single sheets and duvets.

### Things to weigh up

- Raised beds with desks or wardrobes are heavy and hard to move once built.
- Raised beds have age limits. They are not suitable for every child.
- Making a bed up high is harder for parents.
- A raised bed needs enough ceiling height for the child to sit up.
- Thick mattresses can lower the guardrail height on raised beds.

## What sizes do kids beds come in?
Most kids beds take a UK Single mattress, 90 × 190 cm, or a Small Single, 75 × 190 cm. Some imported frames use 90 × 200 cm instead.

Toddler and cot beds use their own model-specific sizes. Measure the frame and buy the mattress the maker names.

Raised beds also have a maximum mattress depth. A deeper mattress can make the guardrail too low, so use the depth on the instructions.

| UK size | Mattress size | Shop name |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small Single | 75 × 190 cm | 2ft 6 |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 3ft |
| Small Double | 120 × 190 cm | 4ft |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 4ft 6 |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 5ft |
| Super King | 180 × 200 cm | 6ft |
| Emperor (common) | 200 × 200 cm | 6 ft 6 |

Frames and headboards can be bigger than the mattress. Ask for the outer size in centimetres.

## What should you check before buying kids beds?

- Bed height: low beds suit younger children who are moving out of a cot.
- Minimum age: check the maker’s age guidance. Upper bunks and high beds are not for children under six.
- Mattress size: buy the exact size in centimetres that the frame lists.
- Mattress depth: stay at or below the maker’s maximum so the guardrail stays high enough.
- Ceiling height: measure from the top mattress to the ceiling, lights and sloping roofs.
- Guardrails and ladder: all rails must be fitted, and the ladder must be fixed firmly.
- Weight limit: ask for the limit for each sleeping level.
- Storage and desk: check drawer and desk sizes, and that doors open without blocking the ladder.
- Instructions: keep the assembly manual and model number for spare parts later.

## Will kids beds fit your room?
A single bed against a wall leaves the most floor space for play. A raised bed adds space under the bed instead.

Measure the room in three dimensions: floor space and ceiling height. A raised bed may fit the floor but not the height.

Keep the route from the bed to the door clear at night.

Avoid placing raised beds next to windows, blind cords or hot radiators.

Plan it with the [bed room planner](/tools/bed-room-planner/).

## Delivery and assembly
Measure stairs and doorways for the longest box. Raised beds have long uprights and rails.

Many kids beds arrive flat-packed in several boxes. Check you have every part before you start.

Build the frame with two people and follow the steps in order. Fit all guardrails before anyone sleeps on a raised bed.

Re-tighten bolts after the first couple of days, then check them regularly.

Check your doors, stairs and turns with the [delivery fit checker](/tools/delivery-fit-checker/).

## How do you look after kids beds?
Teach children to use the ladder, not the guardrails, to climb up and down.

Check bolts, rails and the ladder regularly, especially on raised beds.

Use a mattress protector and wash bedding as the labels say.

Stop using a raised bed if a rail is loose or broken. Get the maker’s replacement part.

##
Frequently asked questions

### What size bed is best for a child?
Many children go from a cot bed to a Small Single (75 × 190 cm) or a UK Single (90 × 190 cm). A Single lasts the longest. Choose by the room size and the frame, in centimetres.

### What age is a cabin bed for?
It depends on the height and the maker. Lower cabin beds may suit younger children. Always follow the maker’s age guidance for that exact model.

### What age can a child sleep in a high sleeper or top bunk?
Upper bunks and high beds are not suitable for children under six. Some makers set a higher age for their model. Follow the maker’s guidance for the exact bed you buy.

### What is the difference between a mid sleeper and a high sleeper?
A mid sleeper is a medium-height raised bed with storage or play space below. A high sleeper is taller and often has room for a desk underneath. It needs more ceiling height.

### What mattress goes on a kids bed?
Use the size and maximum depth the bed maker gives. On raised beds this matters for guardrail height. A supportive, even mattress suits most children.

### How high should my ceiling be for a high sleeper?
Check the maker’s ceiling requirement for that model. Measure from the top of the mattress to the ceiling. The child should be able to sit up without hitting the ceiling or a light fitting.

### Should I buy a second-hand kids bed?
Only with the original instructions and every part. Check for loose or missing rails and fittings. Replacement parts should come from the maker for that model.

### Can kids beds have storage?
Yes. Cabin beds, mid sleepers and some single beds have drawers, shelves or cupboards underneath. Check the drawer sizes, and that drawers open fully without blocking the ladder.

### Where can I buy kids beds in the UK?
BedGuide lists 6 verified UK companies that sell kids beds, including 1 factory or manufacturer. Each is active on Companies House and has a checked website. Compare prices on each seller’s own page.
