# Electric adjustable beds
Electric adjustable beds use motors to raise the head or foot of the mattress at the press of a button. Single, dual and split Super King versions are common. Before you buy, check the mattress is approved for the base, the weight limit, the power supply and the space the moving parts need.

## What are electric adjustable beds?
People choose adjustable beds for comfort when reading, watching TV or resting in bed. This page explains the features only, not health uses.

An electric adjustable bed has a base in hinged sections. Motors raise and lower the sections. You control them with a handset or remote.

The mattress bends with the base. So the mattress must be designed for an adjustable base. Not every mattress can bend without damage.

The sections are usually the head, the back, the knees and the feet. More sections let the mattress follow more positions.

Many adjustable beds look like a normal divan or upholstered bed. Some lift the whole bed height too, which is a different job from reclining.

## What types of electric adjustable beds are there?

### Two-motor beds
One motor moves the head section and one moves the foot section. This is the most common type.

### Dual adjustable beds
Two separate bases side by side, each with its own controls. Each sleeper can choose their own position.

### Split Super King beds
Two narrow bases and two mattresses making a Super King. Each side moves on its own.

### Wall-hugger beds
The base slides back as it rises, so the bed stays close to the wall and bedside table.

### Divan-style adjustable beds
The motorised base sits inside a fabric divan surround, so the bed looks like a normal divan.

### Adjustable slatted frames
A motorised slatted frame that fits inside a bed frame or bedstead. Check it suits your existing frame.

## What are the pros and cons of electric adjustable beds?

### Good points

- You can lower the bed back to flat for normal sleeping at any time.
- You can raise the head to read or watch TV in bed.
- Dual and split beds let each sleeper choose their own position.
- Many look like normal beds, so they fit a standard bedroom.
- Positions can often be saved on the remote.

### Things to weigh up

- Bedding needs to suit the moving shape. Deep fitted sheets with good elastic stay on best.
- Not every mattress is suitable. You may need a new one.
- There are motors and electrics that can need repairs.
- They need a power socket near the bed.
- Moving sections need clear space around the bed.
- They are heavy and usually need professional installation.

## What sizes do electric adjustable beds come in?
The sizes match normal UK beds, so standard sheets fit single-piece adjustable beds. Split beds need two smaller sheets.

Electric adjustable beds come in Single 90 × 190 cm, Small Double 120 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm.

Many larger sizes are made as two halves. A split Super King is two narrow mattresses side by side. Check the size of each half for sheets.

Ask for the full frame size and the clearance needed while sections move.

| UK size | Mattress size | Shop name |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small Single | 75 × 190 cm | 2ft 6 |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 3ft |
| Small Double | 120 × 190 cm | 4ft |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 4ft 6 |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 5ft |
| Super King | 180 × 200 cm | 6ft |
| Emperor (common) | 200 × 200 cm | 6 ft 6 |

Frames and headboards can be bigger than the mattress. Ask for the outer size in centimetres.

## What should you check before buying electric adjustable beds?

- Mattress size: on split beds, check the size of each mattress half in centimetres.
- Mattress: get written confirmation that your mattress model is approved for the base.
- Weight limit: ask whether it covers the sleeper only or includes the mattress and bedding, and whether it is per side.
- Movement: which sections move, and whether there is a wall-hugger action.
- Power: where the plug goes, and what happens in a power cut.
- Controls: try the remote, and check basic functions work without a phone app.
- Clearance: the space needed around and under the bed while it moves.
- Installation: who delivers, assembles and shows you how it works.
- Warranty: check the motor, the frame and the controls separately.

## Will electric adjustable beds fit your room?
Bedside tables at the right height make the remote and a lamp easy to reach when the head section is raised.

Check headboards, shelves and windows behind the bed. A rising head section needs space to move.

Measure the full frame, not just the mattress. Ask for a drawing that shows clearance while the sections move.

Keep the space under and around the moving parts clear of boxes, pets and cables.

Plan a power socket near the bed and a safe cable route.

Plan it with the [bed room planner](/tools/bed-room-planner/).

## Delivery and assembly
Plan the delivery day. The installers may need to bring the base upstairs in parts and connect the motors in the room.

Adjustable beds are heavy. Give the seller your stair and doorway measurements before delivery.

Ask whether installation is included and whether the team will demonstrate the controls.

Keep the manual, serial numbers and order details together for repairs.

Check your doors, stairs and turns with the [delivery fit checker](/tools/delivery-fit-checker/).

## How do you look after electric adjustable beds?
Lower the bed to flat before cleaning underneath it, and switch it off at the wall first.

Follow the maker’s maintenance checks. Some checks need an authorised technician.

Keep the handset safe and the batteries fresh, and ask how to get a replacement remote.

Turn the mattress or rotate it only as the mattress maker allows for adjustable bases.

##
Frequently asked questions

### Can any mattress go on an adjustable bed?
No. The mattress must be designed to bend with the base. Ask for written confirmation that the exact mattress model is approved for the exact adjustable base.

### Can couples have different positions on an adjustable bed?
Yes, with a dual or split design. Each side has its own base, mattress and controls. A single shared base moves both sides together, so both sleepers share one position.

### What is a wall-hugger adjustable bed?
A design where the base slides backwards as it rises. The bed stays close to the wall, so you can still reach your bedside table.

### Do adjustable beds need a plug socket?
Yes. The motors run on mains power. Ask what happens in a power cut and whether there is a way to lower the bed without power.

### What size are split Super King adjustable beds?
A split Super King uses two narrow mattresses that together make about 180 × 200 cm. Check the size of each half so you can buy the right sheets.

### Are adjustable beds noisy?
The motors make some sound while the bed is moving. They are quiet when the bed is still. Ask to hear the bed move in a showroom, or ask the seller about motor noise.

### Can I keep my headboard with an adjustable bed?
Sometimes. Wall-mounted or strut headboards may fit if the base allows them. Ask the seller first, because the moving head section needs clear space at the top of the bed.

### What does an adjustable bed weight limit include?
It varies. It can mean the sleeper only, or the sleeper plus mattress and bedding, per side or for the whole bed. Ask the seller to confirm in writing.

### Where can I buy electric adjustable beds in the UK?
