# Before You Buy a Bed Base (UK Checklist)

> Before you buy a bed base in the UK, match the base to your mattress warranty, storage need and room access. Platform divans and firm foundations suit many foam and hybrid mattresses. Slats need gaps inside the stated limit. Ottomans need lid clearance and gas struts rated for mattress weight. Adjustable bases need flex-rated mattresses. Measure doorways and walkways first.

Structural components: mattress platform or slats, storage drawers or void, legs or plinth, optional headboard fixings.

## The checklist

### 1. Mattress first (or together)

If you already own a mattress, read its base rules before you shop frames. Start

### 2. UK size in centimetres

Match [UK sizes](/sizing/uk-standard-bed-sizes). A continental 140 × 200 cm
mattress will not sit correctly on a UK Double base.

### 3. Storage need

### 5. Clearance and access

- Ottoman lid arc and wall space  
- Drawer pull space beside the bed

### 6. Headboard and fixings

Check strut hole positions and board height against the wall and windows — see

### 7. Weight and mechanism ratings

Ottoman gas struts must match mattress weight. Bunk and high sleepers have age

### 8. Refunds if you change your mind or the base is wrong

A size or colour change after a shop visit is not an automatic legal refund. A distance order often has a 14-day cancel right. ### What should I check before buying a divan or ottoman?

Confirm UK size in centimetres, mattress warranty base rules, drawer or lid clearance, and whether gas struts are rated for your mattress weight. Measure doorways for the largest panels before delivery day.

### Can any mattress go on any base?

No. Many foam and hybrid warranties need a solid platform or closely spaced slats. Wide slat gaps or soft older box springs can void cover. Check mattress–base compatibility for the specific mattress type.

### Divan drawers or ottoman storage?
