# Bed Height for Getting In and Out

> Bed height for getting in and out is the floor-to-top-of-mattress stack. Measure that number in centimetres. Sit on the edge with feet flat. If knees sit much higher than hips, the stack is low. If feet dangle, it is high. Divan, castors, mattress depth and toppers all add up. This is furniture measuring, not medical advice.

Structural components: bed base or divan, mattress, optional topper, legs or castors.

Key facts:

- The stack: Floor to top — Base + mattress + permanent topper. Measure it.
- Home test: Sit and check — Feet flat. Knees much higher than hips means a low stack for you.
- Castors and depth: Parts add — “Divan” is not a height. Depth and feet change the number.
- Furniture only: Not clinical — Surgery and named conditions need a clinician, not this page.

## What number is “bed height”?

Bed height for getting in and out is the **floor-to-top-of-mattress** stack. It is not the mattress depth alone. It is not the word divan.

A Brunel University home-furniture sheet, hosted by Independent Living, shows the same idea: take the covers off, sit, then measure from the floor to the top of the mattress. That PDF was checked on 28 August 2026. It is a measuring method. It is not a hospital prescription.

There is no British Standard home bed height. Hospital research uses different beds and different goals. We will not copy those bands onto a UK divan. If you have a health reason to change height, ask a clinician or an occupational therapist.

## How do I measure the stack?

1. Strip the duvet and pillows.
2. Stand at the side you actually use.
3. Measure from the floor to the highest mattress face, in centimetres.
4. Add a permanent [topper](/bedding/mattress-toppers).
5. Sit on the edge. Notice how far the edge sinks.
6. Look at your feet and your knees.

| What you see when you sit | Furniture reading | First furniture check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Feet flat, thighs nearer level | Stack is in a usable band *for you* | Keep the number. Write it down. |
| Knees much higher than hips | Stack is low for you | Higher feet, a thicker mattress, or a taller base |
| Feet dangle, or you hop up | Stack is high for you | Lower feet, a slimmer mattress, or lose a thick topper |
| Edge collapses when you sit | Soft edge, not only height | [Edge support](/mattresses/edge-support) and base type |

[Mattress depth](/sizing/mattress-depth-guide) often runs from about 15 cm on slim foam to 35 cm or more on pillow-top hybrids. A 20 cm change in mattress depth moves the sit as much as swapping many divan feet.

## What parts add height?

| Part | How it changes the sit |
| --- | --- |
| [Divan](/beds/divan-platform-vs-sprung) or platform | The box or frame is the first number |
| Legs or castors | Castors usually add more than low glides |
| Mattress depth | Pillow-tops sit you higher than slim foam |
| Permanent topper | Extra centimetres and a softer sit |
| [Ottoman](/beds/ottoman-mechanics) chassis | Can sit higher than a low slatted frame |
| [Adjustable base](/beds/adjustable-beds) | Height and a moving edge; only with a flex-rated mattress |

Do not guess from a shop name. Two “King divans” can differ by more than 10 cm once feet and mattresses differ.

A taller stack can hit a low sill or a sloped ceiling. Measure the room on [how to measure a bedroom](/sizing/how-to-measure-a-bedroom-for-a-bed).

## What can I change without a new bed?

- Swap high castors for lower feet, if the maker allows it and the base still clears the floor.
- Change mattress depth when you next replace the mattress.
- Skip a thick topper if you already sit too high.
- Add a topper only as a short feel test if the sit is a little low and the core is otherwise sound.

A stool or a step is a trip risk. We will not recommend one as a product.

If getting in and out has become hard because of health, stop here. Use [changing sleep needs](/care/changing-sleep-needs) for the furniture list. Speak to a clinician for the health list.

## Frequently asked questions

### What height should a bed be to get in and out?

There is no single UK home number. Measure floor to the top of the mattress. Sit with feet flat. If knees sit much higher than hips, the bed is low for you. If feet dangle, it is high. Ask a clinician if you have a health reason to change height.

### How do I measure bed height in centimetres?

Strip the duvet. Sit, then stand. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress at the side you get out. Add a permanent topper. Note that the edge sinks when you sit.

### Do castors and mattress depth change bed height?

Yes. A divan on castors is taller than the same box on low feet. A 30 cm mattress on a 35 cm base is not the same stack as a 20 cm foam on a low platform. Add the parts. Do not guess from the name “divan”.

### Can a topper make a bed too high?

Yes. A thick topper adds height and a softer sit. Fitted sheets must cover the new stack. If you already struggle to sit on the edge, a deep topper can make the step worse.
