# Mattress Toppers — Density, Gel and Feel Change

> A mattress topper is a thick pad on top of the mattress. It softens or firms the sleep surface without replacing the core. Foam density and thickness control durability and sink. Gel changes heat feel but is not a new material type. Toppers change the top feel — they cannot fix broken springs or squashed foam cores.

Materials covered: memory foam, polyfoam, gel-infused foam, latex, feather and fibre.

## What toppers change — and what they do not

**Change:** softness, first pressure feel, how firm the top seems, total bed height for [fitted sheets](/sizing/mattress-depth-guide).

**Do not change:** broken spring units, permanently squashed foam cores, wrong mattress size.

### Will a topper make a firm mattress soft?

A thick soft foam or fibre topper can soften the top surface. Very firm cores still limit deep hip and shoulder sink. The biggest change is in the first few centimetres.

### Does cooling gel make a topper cold?

Gel changes how heat moves through the foam. It does not cool the bed like a fridge. Open foam structure and bedding TOG still control overnight heat.

### Can a topper fix sagging?

No. Toppers only change the top feel. Deep body dips or broken support mean the mattress itself needs replacing.
